Joe O’Donnell had “his best game of the year” according to coach Sean Rogers. The middle linebacker was in the Wilmington backfield all night, making tackles for losses to disrupt the Wildcats running game. In the first quarter with Danvers only up, 7-0 O’Donnell sacked Wilmington QB James O’Regan for a 3-yard loss after Wilmington had recovered a fumble on a punt return at the Danvers 26-yard line, but failed to score. O’Donnell was a force all game, stopping running backs for losses or short gains in Danvers’ 32-7 victory.
Deadlocked at 7-7 against Ipswich on Friday night, the Swampscott football team needed a spark.
The catalyst came in the form of defensive linemen and senior captain Toby Hale.
After the Big Blue took a 14-7 lead in the second quarter, Hale put the Swampscott offense back on the field when he came off the right edge and whalloped Tigers signal caller Kyle Blomster with a blindside hit. Hale jarred the ball loose and Swampscott took over scoring on its next possession to take a 21-7 lead into halftime.
Hale continued to get pressure in the second half as Blomster was only able to get off four pass attempts as he was hounded by Hale and the Big Blue defensive front. Swampscott would go on to win 42-13. Hale finished with two sacks and a forced fumble while helping the Big Blue limit Ipswich to just 114 yards rushing on 34 carries.
NORTH SHORE TECH SENIOR
The Chelsea High School football team knew it would have to hit North Shore Tech with some big plays if it was going to keep pace Saturday afternoon. The plan was to the throw the ball early and often, but the North Shore secondary was more than ready.
LaFavour was the Bulldogs’ leader in the defensive backfield, intercepting two passes on the day and making sure Chelsea never got its passing attack going in a 42-3 win. LaFavour returned one of his interceptions 68 yards to set up a North Shore Tech touchdown, helping his team pull away to improve to 6-3.
LaFavour, a field general at the quarterback position, also scored a rushing touchdown for a North Shore Tech offense that got a lot of help from the defense and special teams in this game.
