Bryan Browne wasn't a long shot to win the 300 meters at the Division 1 boys state track meet yesterday afternoon at the Reggie Lewis Center. Despite his No. 1 seeding, the St. John's Prep senior wasn't exactly the favorite either.
Browne ran 35.72 to get the best of a very good field, however, to prove he was worthy of his high seed.
"He was seeded first, but he had a big breakthrough in our league meet about 10 days ago," St. John's coach Ray Carey said. "We knew it was packed with good kids and it was going to be a difficult race."
Browne passed another runner with 10-15 meters to go to win the race.
Deklan Robinson also tied for fifth in the high jump at 6-2, while David Roy (47-51/2) and Morgan Johnson (47-41/2) took fourth and fifth, respectively, in the shot put for the Eagles.
Peabody's Catarina Rocha won the E-Mass division title in the mile with a time of 4:55 — which was 15 seconds better than the next finisher. Pam Zabala had a solid showing in the shot, coming fourth.
Zach Grube was third in the high jump and eighth in the hurdles for the Tanner boys.

"Yesterday was a good day for us," said Fenwick head coach Jay Smith. "It's nice to finish with some personal bests at the end of the season. We're getting the job done and I am very pleased with the results."
The Lady Generals had an impressive 271/2 points to finish sixth overall as a team. The 4x800 relay team of Emily Weigand, Emily Horgan, Meg Blatchford and Emily Senning, captured first place with a time of 9:39. Senning broke the school record in the 600, running a 1:36.70, which gave her a third-place finish.
