The Marblehead girls and boys basketball programs each have new coaches officially in place now for next season, but there shouldn’t be too much of an adjustment period.
Wayne Hanscom, who began coaching the Magicians’ boys team in the 2005-06 season, elected to slide over to the girls’ sideline when Skip Likins stepped down. That move obviously left a void with the boys, but Marblehead Athletic Director Mark Tarmey didn’t have to look too far to find Hanscom’s replacement.
It was announced last night that former boys basketball coach Mike Giardi will return to the sideline.
Giardi, the Lead Mathematics Teacher at Marblehead and an assistant football coach since 2008, was the head varsity basketball coach for the Magicians from 1999-2005.
Giardi took over a team that had gone 3-17 and he guided them to the Northeastern Conference championship in 2005.
This time around, Giardi will be inheriting a Marblehead team coming off a 6-14 campaign.
Hanscom, meanwhile, is taking over a team that finished 8-12 this winter.
