On the Run: A new low-key 5K for the North Shore

On the Run

---- — Sometimes we get so caught up in signing up for road races with high-concept themes or training for our next long-distance event, we forget the simple joy of just running with a group of like-minded souls. That’s where free weekly runs like the Danvers 5K, the Lynn Woods Cross Country races and the No Rest for the Wicked “5K-ish” come in.

Starting next Monday, another free running event will launch: The North Shore Road Race Guide (NSRRG) 5K, which takes place on the last Monday of each month.

The runs, which start and finish at New England Running Company in Beverly, begin at 6:45 p.m. and will be timed with results posted on the NSRRG website (http://northshoreroadraceguide.com/northshoreroadraceguide5k/).

NSRRG co-directors Timothy Short and Doug Bollen said the inspiration for the monthly runs came after the outpouring of support for a local family affected by the Boston Marathon bombings in April. New England Running Company hosted a fundraising 5K run on April 22 that was hastily assembled and drew about 200 participants.

“After participating in the run that helped raise funds for the Woolfenden family of Salem, we began to talk about hosting a low key run from the store,” said Short. “At that time we knew that the New England Running Company wasn’t offering any group runs from their store, and thought that we could help by partnering with them to organize the runs for them. The partnership that we have with New England Running Company is one that we hope to develop and expand on in the future with other running events.”

In addition, on June 6 New England Running Company began hosting regular 5K runs from the store every other Thursday at 6 p.m.

The NSRRG 5K will offer road race raffles and local discounts to help it stand out.

“Along with the desire to further grow the North Shore Road Race Guide brand, we felt that we could offer New England Running Company some assistance in organizing a run from the store. Allowing us to host this monthly run also gives New England Running Company a great opportunity to further demonstrate why they are one of the top specialty running stores in the area,” Short said.

“We also wanted to create something a little different in terms of the standard ‘weekly runs’ that are very popular right now. Using a monthly run approach and combining that with discounts from Not Your Average Joe’s and New England Running Company, we hope to create a run that will look very exciting and fun to North Shore runners.”

The NSRRG 5K will utilize a simple out-and-back course along Route 1A into Wenham. There will be signs on the course to point out where the turnaround spot is and a map of the course will be available on the NSRRG website, said Short.

Bollen said the NSSRG 5K hopes to be considered in the same breath as the other free runs. “D5K is a great weekly run which we have participated in over the years, but I would have to say overall, it’s all the weekly runs and the running boom which is going on,” he said. “No one single run inspired this, but all of them together contributed… Lynn Woods, the Wicked Running Clubs weekly runs, the Wakefield run hosted by the Mystic Runners. It just seemed like a natural thing to add on an open date in the calendar and it’s just monthly, not weekly.”

Bollen and Short have modest goals for the run.

“We think the goals of the monthly run are to have a fun social run with runners, offer runners their times for a 5K, and obviously give something back to the running community as a fun run,” Bollen said.

NSRRG is hoping for 25 to 40 runners the first few months, eventually growing to more than 50. “It’s not an overwhelming number, but a good sized group that would come back after the race and maybe stop by Not Your Average Joe’s, pick up race applications from us and pick up their running gear at NERC.”

The dates of future NSRRG 5K runs are July 29, Aug. 26, Sept. 30, Oct. 28, Nov. 25 and Dec. 30. Runners will receive a 15% discount off of their food order at Not Your Average Joe’s when they mention that they have participated in the run.
