Billerica's second half performance too much for Masconomet

BILLERICA— Masconomet girls basketball head coach Bob Romeo knew his team had its work cut out for them in the Division 1 North quarterfinals against the No. 2 seed from Billerica High.

The seventh-seeded Chieftains were fresh off a victory against Cambridge in the first round and channeled that momentum heading into the first quarter of Saturday’s contest. Masconomet put forth its best effort in the opening stanza, leading by a basket after the first eight minutes — but struggled from the field in second half, which ultimately gave way to a 64-42 Billerica victory.

“We were only down by seven at halftime, and it was only a matter of getting some stops. But we struggled in the third quarter to score,” said Romeo, whose team finished 16-6. “Billerica’s guard play was phenomenal and we didn’t get any dribble drive. We had a lot of great looks, but the shots just wouldn’t go down for us. If you get those looks and the ball doesn’t fell for you, you’re aren’t going to win too many games.”

The Indians (20-2) outscored Masconomet 14-8 in the third quarter and held the visitors to nine in the fourth. The Chieftains went through a six-minute scoring funk between these those two quarters, when Billerica took its largest lead of the game.

“We knew Masco was strong and athletic and liked to score in transition, (so) we had to stop that, “ said Billerica head coach Chris Doneski. “We gave them a lot of easy baskets in transition in the first half and basically shut that down in the second.”

Junior Nicole Femino (8 rebounds) was one of Masconomet’s most consistent scores throughout the game, netting a team-high 17 points. Senior captain Claudia Marsh added 11 points, six rebounds and four assists. Marsh, a three-year starter for the Chieftains, was the backbone and leader on the team this season.
