BURLINGTON – Not much separated the Wilmington and Danvers girls’ basketball teams in the Division 2 quarterfinals last night. Both teams came in with identical 13-8 records and play a similar style. The Wildcats pulled out the 54-47 victory by scoring the final seven points.
“It came down to making plays,” said Falcons coach Pat Veilleux. “Wilmington is a very good team with incredible foot speed. I would have loved to win, but I couldn’t ask for a better effort.
“Last March (5-15) if anybody told me we’d be here I wouldn’t have believed it, but the girls worked their tails off to get here. I thought we were a little tentative at the beginning and I wanted to attack the basket more. This is valuable experience for our younger kids.”
Wilmington held a second half lead until Danvers tied it at 47 all on a 3-pointer by freshman Hannah Llewellyn (eight points) with two minutes remaining. But Wildcat senior captain Michelle Woods (20 points) answered with consecutive baskets.
Wilmington’s speed caused problems, especially point guard Christa Brent, (five steals, 13 points). Kasey Sherry and Emily McNulty each had a dozen for Danvers, while freshman Devin Walsh finished with 11.
“This was a great ball game,” said Wilmington head coach Jay Keane. “We had to get out on their excellent outside shooters, and McNulty has a great drop step shot inside. We’re very similar, and switch up our defenses between zone and man-to-man like they do. We like to play transition, and being quick helps.
“Woods is our high scorer, averaging 10 points, but we need to play good defense and spread the offense. Brent does a great job running the team and doesn’t take a second off.”
Danvers will lose Sherry and Sarah Potter, but everybody else is back. Veilleux said they will be hard to replace, but others have to step up. Having two tournament games under their belts, will only help.
