Area roundup: Peabody girls win Freshman-Sophomore Meet

Peabody took first place in the Northeastern Conference Freshman/Sophomore Meet over the weekend with a team total of 50.5 points. Though Peabody didn’t have any first place finishers Katherine Pence was second in shot (28 feet), Carrera Dean placed second in the 600 (1:51.7) and Mariah DeFreitas also came in second in the 2 mile (14:36.3).

One of Beverly’s top performers were Krystina Francesca who was first in the high jump (4-8) and Catherine Sweeney who won the 2-mile. Swampscott’s Isabella Kornitstay placed fist in the mile (5:46.9). Kathleen Huber of Marblehead was first in the 600, and Danvers’ Catalina Dominick took the 1,000.

Fenwick’s Lepley takes second: Bishop Fenwick senior Maggie Lepley placed second in the 20-pound weight throw this weekend at the Boston Holiday Challenge at the Reggie Lewis Center. Lepley threw 35-5 to finish as the runner-up.

Arianna Maida also ran a personal best 5:30 in the mile to finish in 14th.

BOYS TRACK

Peabody and Gloucester tie for first: The Tanners were once again victorious, this time tying with Gloucester with a team total of 68 points in the Freshman/Sophomore Meet. Marcus Vieira won the shot and Christian Cedullo took the 50 yard hurdles. Danvers finished with a team total of 41 points led by Zach Persson (high jump) and John Thomas (50 dash). Beverly’s Alex Grecco was first in the mile. Salem’s Timmy Ryan won the 300, while Marblehead’s A.J. Ernst took the 2-mile.

Corcoran second for Fenwick: Pat Corcoran threw a personal best 56-6 in the 25-pound weight throw on Saturday at the Boston Holiday Challenge at the Reggie Lewis Center. Corcoran’s throw was three feet better than his previous best. He also had a personal best in the shot put with a 44-5, good for 12th place.

Andrew Carlin was also 10th in the weight throw with a 33-8, and Dan Deschenes placed 10th in the 300 with a 38.2.

WRESTLING

St. John’s Prep sweeps Quad: The Eagles defeated Springfield (49-12), Franklin Tech (62-15), Dean Tech (72-0), and Westerly, R.I (64-6) to move to 19-1 this season. Heavyweight Corey Jean-Jacques won four matches, including his 100th career victory in the win over Westerly, R.I.

Hunter Costa (106 pounds), Lou Bornstein (113), D.J. Lemieux (126), Jared Costa (138), Peter Locke (160), Jon Polansky (195), and Ian Butterbrodt (220) were other St. John’s wrestlers who finished 4-0.

BOYS HOCKEY

Marblehead 3, Bishop Stang 0: Matt Koopman scored a pair of goals as the Magicians move to 4-2 on the season. Ian Maag had the other score for Marblehead, while goalie Harrison Young made 15 saves for the shutout.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Salem wins tournament consolation game: The Witches traveled to Malden Catholic to take part in the IAABO 27 Referees vs. Cancer Holiday Basketball Tournament. Though Salem lost the opening game, 69-60, to host MC, Christian Dunston dropped in an impressive 22 points. Jared Louf-Woods recorded a double-double with 12 points and 16 rebounds.

In the consolation game, the Witches ran away with a 87-42 victory over Belmont to improve to 4-1. Again Salem had a huge game from Dunston who scored 21 points, but it also got a lift from its bench. Nick Salamida added 11 points and 10 rebounds, Jamie Dominguez recorded 15 points, David Kazadi finished 12 points and seven rebounds, and Louf-Woods added 11.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Vikings win a pair: Andrew White’s late layups helped propel Salem State past UMaine Presque, 86-75 on Saturday night in the opening round of the 2012 Salem State Holiday Classic. White and Tavone Wynder each finished with 17 points, while Justin Nieves added 14. In the final round, the Vikings defeated Southern Maine 93-83 and were led by Nate Simpson, who scored 18 points and grabbed 24 rebounds and was named team tournament MVP. Nieves had another solid outing with 17 points and Bryan Ortiz finished with 16 on the night.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

SSU wins two in Holiday tourney: Ginny Fleming (14 points), Bridget Dullea (13) and Rachel Ledbetter (11) led the Vikings to a 69-44 win over Dominican in the opening round of the 2012 Salem State Holiday Classic. In the final round, Fleming powered the Vikings once again with 10 points and 12 rebounds and was named team tournament MVP as SSU defeated D’Youville, 68-50. Dullea recorded a game-high 20 points as the Vikings improve to 6-5 overall.
