Area roundup: Peabody girls hockey rallies for clutch win

Marblehead 7, Cambridge 5: Freshman Brittany Lydon scored three goals and dished out four assists as Marblehead (5-4) overcome a 3-0 hole to win its second straight. Rachel McKay contributed two goals and three helpers to the cause while Brittany Smith finished with two goals and one assist.

Masconomet 3, Winthrop 0: Senior goalie Alex Jones was immense for the Chieftains, stopping 40 shots to record the shutout. Freshman Katie Terban scored twice, including an empty-netter with only 1:08 to play to seal the deal for Masco (5-3). Jensena Moner also scored for Masco, and Kylie Currier pitched in a pair of assists.


BEVERLY 8, CAMBRIDGE 0: The Panthers (10-0-1) qualified for the state tournament and pitched their second shutout in as many days while blanking an opponent for the fourth time in six 2013 games. The top line of Ryan Santo (goal, 2 assists), Andrew Irving (2 goals, assist), Connor Irving (goal, 3 assists) had a big night, with Graham Doherty, Kevin Lally, Nick Albano and Brendan Boyle also scoring. Junior Bryce Mitchell needed to make only a half-dozen saves to earn the goose egg.

SALEM 4, EAST BOSTON 2: The Witches (2-7-2) got their first win since opening night and came out firing with 43 shots on net. Spencer Bergholtz had two goals and an assist while Danny Heck added a goal and an assist.

“It was huge win and great game for us,” said head coach Ted Hanley. “We really need this one.”

Grant Thompson had 19 saves in goal for Salem, which also got a goal from Adam Ngo while Sam Petri finished with two assists on the night.

SWAMPSCOTT 3, EAST LONGMEADOW 0: Freshman Noah Maercklein scored a pair of goals as the Big Blue (9-1) moved to within two points of clinching a playoff berth. Sophomore Tyler Gallagher stopped 23 shots for the shutout while junior forward Joe Silva added a goal. Chris Carman (2), Patrick Burkett and captain Trevor Massey all added assists in the win. Swampscott plays unbeaten Beverly Saturday at Salem State (3 p.m.).
