The Boston Lobsters have announced their roster for the 2013 Mylan World TeamTennis season. This year’s team includes veteran Eric Butorac along with newcomers Jill Craybas, Paola Suarez and Amir Weintraub.
“We got our first round pick that we wanted (Craybas), and we got pretty much everyone that was on our board who we had rated really high in ability level and the mental and psychological makeup that we are looking for to get through the 14 matches in 18 days,” said Lobsters head coach Bud Schultz.
Butorac, a Cambridge resident when not on Tour, will return for his fourth season. “To be playing at home in Boston once again is great; I look forward to welcoming our teammates,” said Butorac, who has won 13 doubles titles. Last season with the Lobsters, he had victories over Bob and Mike Bryan (Texas Wild) and Leander Paes (Washington Kastles).
Craybas is playing her first season with the Lobsters and her second in WTT. The Providence native has won five doubles titles and one singles crown, has Serena Williams at Wimbledon and was a 2008 Olympian.
She already has familiarity with one of her Lobsters teammates, too. “Jill and I made the semis of the US Open mixed doubles a few years ago and she’s one of my best friends on the Tour. She’s going to be a great addition,” Butorac said.
Suarez will be making her league debut this summer. The Argentine has 44 doubles titles (including 8 Grand Slams) and been world No. 1.
Weintraub, a member of the Israeli Davis Cup team, last year played against the Lobsters as a member of the Springfield Lasers.
“I was really impressed with his game,” Butorac said of Weintraub. “He has had some really big wins for Israel in Davis Cup and obviously thrives in the team format.”
Joining the Lobsters will be former Top 10 player Mark Philippoussis.
The team will open its season hosting the New York Sportimes on Sunday, July 7. All home matches start at 7 p.m. and will be played at the new Joan Norton Tennis Center at the Manchester Athletic Club.
