SALEM — The women's varsity sports teams at Salem State University will wear pink uniforms for the remainder of the 2010-11 season when hosting a "Pink Zone" event in an effort to raise awareness about breast cancer.
The initiative was inspired by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) Pink Zone. Salem State athletic director Tim Shea said he recognizes the importance of supporting this campaign.
"Outfitting all of our women's teams in pink uniforms shows that Salem State University has significant interest and support for breast cancer research," Shea said in a statement.
"Female athletes are fantastic role models in our society and if pink uniforms can help call attention to this worthy cause, then the University and the athletic department are very happy to assist."
Already this fall, the Salem State volleyball team hosted its second annual "Dig Pink" night as part of their match against the visiting Rhode Island College Anchorwomen. The game, which drew the largest crowd of the season, helped raise proceeds which were donated to the Side-Out Foundation.
Other teams hope to duplicate their success as each team plans to organize a variety of events, which will be spread throughout the school sports season.
