Football roundup: H-W falls to North Reading, Swampscott gets first win

NORTH READING — The Hamilton-Wenham defense played much better than they did in a Week 1 loss to Bishop Fenwick last night, but the end result was the same as the Generals fell to host North Reading, 16-0.

C.J. McCarthy scored a pair of TDs for the Hornets (2-0) and rushed for 119 yards. Both North Reading’s scores came in the second quarter and the Generals couldn’t get it going offensively.

““I’m really proud of the way our guys played. I know that might sound strange because we lost, you never like to lose, but we played so hard tonight and gave them all they could handle. Our guys gave us everything they had. That’s a great football team over there,” H-W coach Andrew Morency said. “When they get rolling with that they’re really lethal. They’re a hard team to defend because you have to really work hard in order to stop them. We found something out about some of our guys the way we played tough. I’m proud of these kids.”

The Generals didn’t have top running back Cam Macri and Ian Dickey ran for 44 yards on 12 jaunts in his stead. Jack Clay threw for 164 yards, with Christian Ecker catching seven for 81 yards, but Clay also threw four interceptions.

“You have to remember it’s (Jack’s), it’s only his second start. Jack’s going to get better. We need to clean up our offense but we’ll be better. We were able to move the ball really well on the first drive and at other times as well,” said Morency.

SWAMPSCOTT 28, WINTHROP 14: Desmond Wilhelmsen ran for well over 100 yards and scored a pair of TDs as the Big Blue (1-2) grabbed their first win on the road at Miller Field.

QB Brandon McDonald rushed for a TD and threw a TD pass to Trevor Kelly as the Big Blue took a 22-6 lead. Wilhelmsen rumbled for an 85 yard score after Winthrop had turned it over on downs in the red zone to help the Big Blue put the game away.
