Tuesday's area roundup: Beverly boys edge Danvers in cross country thriller

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Beverly 25, Danvers 31: The Panthers (3-1) got a total team victory as Campbell Wood was second overall (16:54) and the group of Brian McPherson (17:20), Anthony Morrissey (17:48) and Michael Scott (17:49) went 4-5-6 to pick up pivotal points. Zach Bauer ran 18:04 to help Beverly seal the win.”Every finish was big today,” said Beverly coach Sean Dunleavy. “All those places in the middle were pivotal. It was big for Campbell to break up Danvers’ top two, for the middle guys to run together and for Zach to cap things off.”Danvers’ James Bailey was the overall race winner in 16:40 and Kevin Hebert was third in 17:02. Ryan Heber (7th, 18:00) and Ryan Cassidy (9th, 18:21) were also in the top 10.”It was very close,” said Danvers coach John Norris, “A very exciting race.”

Swampscott 15, Salem 48: The Big Blue’s Matt Mahoney set a new Salem High course record at Winter Island by finishing in 17:43 and Swampscott (4-0) stayed perfect on the season. Bennett Smith (19:06), Marco Scibelli (19:16), Noah Conti (19:31), Robert McLaughlin (19:47) and Emery Green (20:18) were the top six for Swampscott.

Fenwick splits: Eric Loehle was the top finisher in the tri-meet in fourth with a time of 19:21 as Fenwick beat Lowell Catholic 20-37 but fell to Arlington Catholic 25-31. Nick Tambini was sixth (19:47) and Matt Loehle seventh (19:50 for the Crusaders (2-2) while Billy Noftle and Sean Cray tied for tenth with times of 20:32.

St. John’s Prep 15, Catholic Memorial 50: Senior John Brennan placed first overall with a time of 18:05 to help the Eagles stay undefeated (2-0) on the season. Evan MacMullin (18:26) was second, Dan McGinn (18:57) came in third and sophomore Jackson Skelley (18:59) finished fourth.

Marblehead 15, Lynn Classical 50: Race winner Chris Rodts ran 17:11 while Adam Linsky came in at 17:46 and Hillman Hollister finished in 17:52 as the Magicians stayed perfect on the season at 3-0.

VOLLEYBALL

Bishop Fenwick 3, Matignon 0: Chandler Wilder had 14 digs and the Crusaders (6-1) came away with a 25-13, 25-9, 25-15 win. Julie Ywuc paced the offense with 11 assists, Jen Crovo had 12 kills and Madison Camela came up with eight kills.
