The Salem News

---- — Melikke Van Alstyne of Salem, who ran for over 6,000 yards during his career at Framingham State University, was named to the 2013 New England Football Writers Division 2-3 All-New England team.

It is the third straight season that Van Alstyne has been named All-New England.

Van Alstyne rushed for 1,620 yards and 19 touchdowns on 308 carries for the Rams this fall, guiding his team to the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC) championship and a second straight berth in the NCAA Division 3 playoffs. He was also a First Team All-MASCAC selection.

He finished his remarkable career with 6,145 rushing yards, the most ever by a Division 3 New England college running back and one of only three backs to ever hit the 6,000-yard mark. He also finished his career with 65 touchdowns and a total of 408 points (fourth best total in New England Division 3 history).

Framingham State finished the season 9-2 as Van Alstyne rushed for 100 or more yards in all but one of those contests. He also had two 200-yard games: 214 yards and a touchdown in the season opener vs. Endicott College and 228 yards and a pair of scores against Mass. Maritime.

The 5-foot-10, 190-pound Van Alstyne also caught 14 passes for 106 yards, including a touchdown grab against Fitchburg State.

Holder of Framingham State’s records for yards in a game (294) and season (1,790) as well as carries in a season (311) and career (1,131), Van Alstyne averaged 147.3 yards per game on the ground this fall.

Majoring in criminology with a minor in psychology, Van Alstyne is also Salem High’s all-time rushing leader with 3,853 yards and had 40 touchdowns in his high school career.
