The Big Blue senior was consistently the top runner not just for his team but in the entire Northeastern Conference all season long. Mahoney won the NEC crown in a blistering time of 15:38, a full 52 seconds faster than his last year’s time when he was third.
He placed third at the Eastern Mass. Division 5 race in 15:39 and was seventh overall at the All-State Division 2 race in 14:50.
“Matt was undefeated all season and performed extremely well at the big meets,” said coach Jeff Bartlett.
The Big Blue captain set a new record at the Swampscott course and was third at the Frank Kelley Invitational. At the McIntyre Twilight Meet he had his best performance of the season, running the sixth fastest 5K time in the state (15:19). Mahoney does it in the classroom as well and is ranked third in his class with a 101.7 average.
“Coach Bartlett has been the biggest influence on my career,” he said. “His training plan and motivation have allowed me to reach my goals and become the runner I am today.”
