GIRLS BASKETBALL
After losing to Pentucket on Sunday, the Chieftains (10-2) were eager to get back to their winning ways. Masconomet head coach Bob Romeo went with a new starting lineup for last night's game against Hamilton-Wenham (5-7), which powered Masconomet to a 61-34 victory.
Masco junior Sarah Lang got her first start and hit three 3-pointers to finish with 11 points for the Chieftains (10-2). Brooke Stewart had a game 24 points, sophomore Lexi Nason had 11 rebounds to go with her three points and freshman Meghan Collins played well with two points, five assists and two steals.
Sophie Prince (eight points) and Samantha Charette were the high scorers for the Generals (5-7).
Beverly 50, Danvers 31: Erin Silvestri scored 10 points and had four assists as the Panthers played smothering defense in the first half and rode that to victory. Andrea Zolano had 12 points and Ashley Keaton had nine rebounds for Beverly while Katie McKenna led Danvers with seven.
Peabody 42, Marblehead 35: Sophomores Carolyn Scacchi (14 points, 11 rebounds) and Olivia Summitt (11 points, 12 rebounds) each had double-doubles as the Tanners (5-8) grabbed a much needed win. Emily Freedland led Mabrlehead (7-6) with 18 points including four trifectas.
Lynn English 40, Swampscott 34: The Big Blue fell in a defensive struggle of two of the NEC's top clubs. Ara Talkov had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Swampscott (10-3) while Niki Laskaris added 13 points and 10 boards.
Salem 35, Gloucester 29: Freshman Jaclyn Panneton powered the Witches (8-5) for their third straight victory with nine points, while captain Holbrook Phelan scored eight.
Bishop Fenwick 48, Austin Prep 28: Alicia Villett (six points) dished out eight assists to lead Bishop Fenwick, which picked up the defensive chatter to hold AP to just 12 second half points. Kate Lipka (nine points) and Maura Doyle (12 points) also had strong games for the Crusaders.
Chelsea 51, NST/Essex Aggie 26: The Rams (2-11) dropped one on the road last night, behind Ashley Mertch's four point performance.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Chelsea 70, NST/ Essex Aggie 44: Junior Elijah Alfred finished with a double-double, including 15 points and 15 rebounds for the Bullsdogs (4-9).
Waring 55, Waldorf 37: Charlie Mitchell had 24 points, 10 rebounds and added five steals to help Waring improve to 5-4. Jack Stanton enjoyed a double-double with 11 points and 10 baords.
Bishop Fenwick 59, Austin Prep 50: Dom Luoni led the Crusaders (3-9) with 23 points and Rishad DeSilva finished with four points, eight assists and nine rebounds. Fenwick outscored Austin Prep 23-9 in the third quarter.
Catholic Memorial 56, St. John's Prep 55: The Eagles (9-5) are still one game short of qualifying for the state tournament after a tough loss at home last night. Owen Marchetti hit three three-pointers in the final minute to slice a big deficit but it wasn't enough. The Prep was plagued by turnovers (25) and missed free throws (11 for 23).
Steve Haladyna scored 22 points to lead St. John's, Isaiah Robinson contributed 12 points and Marchetti finished with 11. Senior guard Mike Carbone missed his second straight game with a concussion. He is due to be checked by doctors again tomorrow.
Salem 62, Gloucester 48: Marvin Baez scored 25 points, grabbed eight rebounds and came up with four steals to lead the Witches to a road win. Salem (8-5) also got nine points and 10 assists from Christian Dunston, while forwards Nick Salamida, Jared Louf-Woods and Taylor Norris also played well.
GYMNASTICS
Masconomet 130.3, Salem 121.05: The Chieftains improved to 6-2 with an excellent evening on the beam. Jessica DeMarco scored 9.35 on beam and 9.1 on vault while junior Julia Small scored 8.65 on beam and 8.6 on floor. Captains Rachel DeMarco and Marissa Angelone each scored 8.3 on beam.
Beverly 137.85, Salem 121.05: Taylor Metta placed first in the all-around with 35.35 for the Panthers (7-0). Beverly honored their seniors last night including; Metta, captain Courtney Hanable, Liz Layman, captain Hailey Rennick, Jen Lomonte and Alexis Hannon.
MEN'S COLLEGE HOCKEY
St. Anselm 6, Salem State 5: The Vikings (11-6-2) fell in their last non-conference game of the year as St. A's broke a 5-5 tie with just 2:49 remaining. Eric DeFelice had a hat trick for Salem State while Nick Lampson (goal, two assists) and Giancarlo Capodanno (goal, assist) also had multi-point efforts.
WOMEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Endicott 54, wentwroth 36: The Gulls (11-7) held Wentworth to just 16 points in the second half and improved to 8-3 in league play. Jennifer White scored 14 points while Samantha Crough and Jordan Ferland each hit double-figures with 10 points.
MCLA 72, Salem State 51: Freshman Rachael Carter scored 10 points but host MCLA pulled away in the second half as the Lady Vikings fell to 9-12. Peabody natives Bridget Dullea and Ginny Fleming each added seven for SSU.
Roger Williams 59, Gordon 54: Freshman Leanna Tallamy was dominant on both end for the Fighting Scots (7-12), finishing with 29 points and 11 rebounds. Fellow freshman Brooke Kratche also earned a double-double, 10 rebounds and 10 points, while Aly Towle chipped in with 11.
MEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Wentworth 80, Endicott 65: John Henault led the Gulls (11-7) with 17 points while Lachlan Magee added 12 and Lance Greene chipped in 13, but it wasn't enough to overcome an early deficit on the road.
Roger Williams 61, Gordon 55: The Fighting Scots (6-13) led by two at the half, but fell short down the stretch. David Dempsey led all scorers with 17 points, and the only Gordon man to finish in double figures.
Salem State 87, MCLA 78: Nate Simpson powered the Vikings (13-7) behind his double-double effort (23 points and 13 rebounds), including five 3-pointers. Brian Clark finished with 22 points, while Justin Nieves and Dan Clark both finished with 10 a piece.
COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL
MIT 3, Endicott 0: The Gulls (0-3) fell to the sixth-ranked team in Division 3 25-19, 26-24, 25-18. Joshua Bruno had eight kills for Endicott while freshman Thomas Stoeckinger had seven kills.
