The St. Mary’s boys soccer team clinched its first Catholic Central Conference title on the heels of a 3-1 win over Austin Prep. Swampscott native Alexander Alleyne, a senior co-captain, scored a goal and two assists in a huge performance that helped the Spartans lock up their first CCC title since 2006.
“It’s my fourth year so I’ve had these kids for four years. (This season) we just stepped it up. I have a lot of talent and a lot of skill,” explained St. Mary’s head coach Mike D’Agostino. “I have 11 seniors and I have to say my senior captains (Alleyne and Mike Russo) stepped it up huge.”
Salem native Noah Camelo scored first on an assist by Alleyne, who netted the second goal before assisting Josh Bertrand on the third and final score of the game. Salem native Helio Neto, the Spartans’ junior keeper, was outstanding in the win.
St. Mary’s is 11-3-3 after wrapping up the conference at 7-2-1.
Beverly 2, Peabody 0: Sean Curtin and Brendon Cronin scored the Beverly (12-4-3) goals while Conor Leahy assisted Curtin’s marker with a spectacular cross ball. With the loss Peabody (9-3-4) missed out on a chance to be co-Northeastern Conference champs with Classical despite strong play from sweeper Maynard Wheeler.
Pingree 4, Bancroft 0: Reese Fulmer, Connor Reardon, Nathan Corning and John Geer were the Pingree (3-7-3) goal scorers while Cam Knowles assisted on Reardon’s goal after a great individual effort up the sideline.
Danvers 3, Marblehead 1: Nicolay Sahkin (assist), Eric Martin and Drew Piazza scored the Danvers (14-2-1) goals. Senior captain Brian Trefry had an assist and his long throw ins kept the pressure on the Magicians all night.
Ipswich 1, Shawsheen 0: Chris DiNocco’s goal off a header set up by Slater Sullivan’s through ball clinched Ipswich’s spot in the upcoming state tournament. Erik Fyrer earned the shutout in net.
