WOMEN'S COLLEGE BASEKTBALL
On the brink of hitting 1,500 career points, Salem State College senior Danielle Jenkins made sure she ecplised that historic mark in a victory.
Jenkins scored 26 to lead the Lady Vikings past Mass. College of Liberal Arts 68-53. She now had 1,518 career points and is fifth on SSC's women's basketball all-time list.
Salem State (13-6, 5-2 MASCAC) never trailed, leading by 18 at the break. Jenkins added nine rebounds and five blocks while freshman Brianna Wilson had a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
PEABODY 58, REVERE 38: Ginny Fleming had a big game with 13 points and 14 rebounds as the Tanners (13-1) stayed red hot. Freshman Hayley Dowd added a dozen points and five steals while Janelle Rodriguez grabbed 10 rebounds. Kerrie O'Shea was also a big part of the Peabody offense with nine points.
LYNN ENGLISH 62, BEVERLY 59: The Panthers (4-10) lost a heartbreaker at the buzzer when heavily favored English hit a 3-pointer as time expired. Three different Panthers had 14 points: Ali Murray (including four 3-pointers), junior Jen Ashton and Rachel Willwerth.
REVERE 58, SALEM 38: Despite 16 points from Jasmine Bryant, the Witches — who led 22-17 at halftime — fell to 5-10 on the season. Amanda Wilkins was the only other scorer for the hosts in double figures with 11.
Danvers 60, Saugus 46: Kellie Macdonald and Sarah Palozola each scored 19 points as Danvers (10-4) qualified for the state tournament for the fourth straight year. Junior guard Gaby Vega and Janelle Saggese both came off the bench to provide quality minutes for the Falcons while Casey Sherry added 10 points.
Arl. Cath. 53, Bp. Fenwick 47: The Crusaders couldn't convert on chances to get the Cougar lead under two late and dipped to 8-7 on the year. Amy Pelletier had a game-high 19 points to go with five rebounds, three steals and four assists while Sarah James scored 10 with six boards.
eSSEX aGGIE 59, n.s. tECH 15: Essex Aggie was led by Emily Pontes and Kim Schuyler, who scored 11 points each. The junior tandem of Heather Hicks and Christine Bixby each scored four points for the Bulldogs.
Marblehead 44, Winthrop 36: The Magicians (5-10) were led by junior center Carly McIver, who had 15 points, 11 rebounds and four blocked shots. Bridget Forbes had 10 points and seven steals, and Olivia Raisner added seven points.
Gloucester 43, swampscott 25: Playing without star Kara Gilberg, the Big Blue fell to 7-8. Guard Ali Talkov had seven points and eight rebounds while Elise Giangregorio scored six and grabbed 10 rebounds.
BOYS BASKETBALL
salem 78, Revere 65: The Witches went to 12-5 overall (8-4 Northeastern Conference) as Raphy Medrano poured in 29 points (21 in the opening half). Antonio Reyes and Sean Linehan each added 14 points. Linehan also pulled down 12 rebounds. The Witches did get some bad news on junior guard Dario Medrano, who is expected to miss the rest of the regular season with stress fractures in the legs.
WInthrop 63, Marblehead 48: The Magicians dropped their third straight away game as Dino Mallios and Ricky Swamsen each scored 15 for the Vikings. Matt Temme had a game-high 15 for Marblehead, who fell to 7-8.
Saugus 57, Danvers 44: The Falcons (2-11) trailed just 43-39 entering the fourth quarter but the game got away from them in the final eight minutes. Nick Strangie (10), Sean Mahegan (8) and Brad LeBlanc (8) led Danvers.
Catholic Memorial 84, St. JOhn's Prep 79: The Knights knocked down 14 three-pointers to hand the Eagles their first loss and force a tie atop the Catholic Conference. Pat Connaughton scored 31 for St. John's (15-1) and had 17 rebounds while Steve Haladyna scored 13 with 17 boards, but CM's hot shooting was too much in the second half.
N.S. Tech 72, Essex Aggie 22: Senior captain Scott Blanchette had nine points and 12 rebounds and Jordan Castillo had a strong all around game with four points, eight assists, eight rebounds and no turnovers. The Bulldogs (12-4) also got solid outings from Pat Wood (11 points) and Jordan Smith (14 points).
Arl. Cath. 69, Bp. Fenwick 64: Trevor Grace (17) and Alex Morsey (16) led the scoring for the Crusaders, who dropped a tough one to a conference rival.
BOYS TRACK
BP. FENWICK 46, CATHEDRAL 21: Both Angela Maida and Bob Farrell had state qualifying times in the 1,000 at 2:54 to lead Fenwick (5-1). Andre Deschenes added a win in the 300 (40.15), Andrew Regan did likewise in the high hurdles (9.86) and sophomore Anthony Consoles threw a personal best in the shot put (35-2) while the 4x400 relay team of Farrell, Deschenes, Maida and Joe O'Brien rolled to victory in a time of 3:58.
SJ Prep 62, SJ Shrewsbury 33: Junior Sean Enos hit a major milestone by tossing the shot 52-1 to break 50 feet for first time in his career as the Prep rolled. Also winning for the Eagles were Pat Driscoll (hurdles, 8.30), Chris Crosby (300, 36.87), Mike Galasso (600, 1:25.67), John Flanagan (1000, 2:38.5), Chris Oesterlin (mile, 4:40.23) and Patrick Murphy (2-mile, 10:23.50). Joe Dumas got his first varsity win in the long jump with a leap of 19-5 and the 4x400 relay won in 3:30.53.
GIRLS TRACK
BP. FENWICK 58, CATHEDRAL 0: Marissa O'Brien and Lan-Anh Nguyen each won two events as Fenwick (6-0) finished the regular season unbeaten. O'Brien won the mile in a personal best time of 6:14 and also captured the long jump (14-3), while Nguyen was victorious in both the high hurdles (10.01) and high jump (4-5) while also taking second in the long jump. Senior Meg Woodcock also had a terrific afternoon, finishing second in both the high hurdles and high jump while earning third place honors in the long jump.
GYMNASTICS
fENWICK 128.95, lOWELL cATH. 113.95: Meg Delory was first on bars (8.3) and beam (9.1) to help the Crusaders improve to 5-2. Kim Shinnick was first on vault (8.3) while Eileen Delory had a nice meet with a second on beam (8.4) and Kristin Killcommons was third on floor (8.3).
Masco 133.25, Marblehead 128.45: Helen Steggall scored a 9.55 on bars and Marissa Angelone scored an 8.3 on beam and an 8.4 on floor to help the Chieftains finish up 4-5.
SWIMMING
Marblehead DUO PREVAILS: Marblehead's Megan Alexander took the NEC 500 free title at the start of the league meet. Salem's Erin Gard was third, Maura Wilson from Danvers was fourth, Hannah Schutz from Swampscott was fifth and Caroline Hall from Beverly was sixth.
In the boys' 500 free, Langston Toxcy from Lynn English was the winner in 5:30.22 while Beverly's Connor Flynn was runner-up. Ryan Hoey from Marblehead was third, Joni Begy from Salem was fourth, Marblehead's Zach Beal was fifth and Steve DeMeule from Peabody was sixth.
Meanwhile, Marblehead's Tyler Strogoff won the diving with a 173.30; Danvers' Brittany Zecha was second with a 157.90; Beverly's Olivia Wilson was third and Marissa Spanos of Marblehead was fourth.
In the boys diving, Lynn Classical's Tom Schumann bested Jared Gaudete of Peabody to win while Billy Wyman of Marblehead was third, Zach Romanovsky of Marblehead was fourth, Colin Delaney of Danvers was fifth and P.J. Nestor from Swampscott was sixth.
MEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
SSC 97, mcla 86: Six players hit double figures as Salem State (6-13, 5-2 MASCAC) won a shootout on the road. Brian Clark led the way with 16 points, Tavone Wynder added 13 and Brennan Bennett, Justin Nieves and Terry Carter all finished with a dozen. Nate Simpson chipped in 11 points in a game with a combined 52 fouls.
