Peabody's Rodgers, Amesbury's Crochiere named Moynihan Student-Athletes of the Month

For their academic achievements in the classroom and their athletic exploits in their respective fields, Peabody High School boys hockey superstar Matt Rodgers and Amesbury High School's indoor track standout Rebecca Crochiere have been named the Moynihan Lumber Student-Athletes of the Month for January.

Matt, a senior captain and left wing for the Tanners, has had a terrific senior season while leading his team to its first ever Northeastern Conference Large hockey championship and an unbeaten record in league play. As a member of Peabody's "Three Amigos" line with center Derrik Pereira and right wing Andrew Bucci, Matt is the second-leading scorer in North Shore hockey circles with 12 goals, 29 assists and 41 points. He has the most assists of any player in the area. A captain in both soccer and lacrosse as well, Matt has also scored four power play goals this winter, has one shorthanded tally and one game-winning strike to go along with a plus/minus rating of +9. Earlier this season, Matt recorded his 100th career point; he currently sits second all-time in Peabody High hockey scoring annals with 134 career points, 17 behind the leader.

In the classroom, Matt excels equally well. He is ranked 22nd in his senior class of 427 students and has a 3.68 grade point average on a scale of 4.0. He scored a 690 in Reading and 670 in both Math and Writing during his SAT tests, and is a two-year member of Peabody High's National Honor Society. In all four years of high school, Matt has earned Highest Honors. He also serves Peabody High as a Student Ambassador to the MIAA.

Rebecca has shown remarkable consistency on both the track and in the classroom. During the month of January, she ran state qualifying times in the mile, 600 meters, 1,000 meters and anchored Amesbury's mile relay team to a state qualifying time as well. She'll compete in each event at this month's All-State Meet at the Reggie Lewis Track & Field Center in Roxbury. Rebecca also broke her school's record in the 1,000 meters, a mark that had been set in 1997.

Academically, Rebecca is the No. 1 student in her senior class. She has a 4.98 weighted grade point average (3.99 unweighted) and scored 2100 on her SATs. She is a member of six different Honor Societys at Amesbury High: the National Honor Society, the English Honor Society (of which she is secretary), the History Honor Society (of which she is president), the Spanish Honor Society, the Math Honor Society and the Journalism Honor Society. In addition, Rebecca is also Secretary of the Student Council, a Class Representative, Yearbook Editor-in-Chief, and member of the school's band and jazz band.
