BOYS BASKETBALL
mARBLEHEAD 51, PENTUCKET 46: Coach Wayne Hanscom's Magicians have been able to put their recent three-game losing streak in the rearview mirror. Marblehead won its second in a row last night and moved a step closer to qualifying for the state tourney as it improved to 9-8 overall. Junior Matt Temme paced the Magicians with 25 points, senior point guard Demarco Dooley had seven and sophomore Matt Gellert also had seven. The winners also got a spark off the bench from Phil Coughlin, who had six rebounds to go with two points. Marblehead can clinch a state tourney berth tonight at Gloucester.
"There's no such thing as (breathing easy) for us," Hanscom said when he was asked about the possibility of making the state tourney. "We're such a young team that we can't take anything for granted."
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Gann Academy 54, Pingree 44: Marblehead's Nancy Epstein scored 25 points and collected 18 rebounds to lead Gann (13-4) to a win at Pingree.
BOYS HOCKEY
MaRBLEHEAD 6, SOMERVILLE 1: Junior defenseman Alex Kulevich had two goals and two assists as the Headers (14-2-3) scored three shorthanded tallies while holding their opponents to just eight shots on net in this road win. Chris McLeod also had two goals, Alex Whitmore had a goal and two assists, and Hunter Graves added one goal and one assist. Captain Anders Gundersen contributed two assists in the win as well.
GIRLS HOCKEY
Masco. 3, Peabody 0: Meg Twomey had a goal and an assist and Pam Herter had two assists to help the Chieftains snap a five-game skid over the weekend. Jess Sholomith also scored, as did Sam Francesconi, while Alyssa Turner, Rebecca Cleary, McKenzie Warren, Erica Ford and Mary Costigan all turned in solid efforts for Masco. Netminder Alex Jones earned her second shutout of the year.
St. Mary's of Lynn 4, Austin Prep 0: Courtney Winters of Swampscott had two goals and two assists — including the 100th of her career — as the Spartans moved to 18-0. Marblehead's Erin McAndrews also scored for St. Mary's, while Angela Dandreo of Swampscott and Marisa Maccario of Marblehead had single assists.
GYMNASTICS
FENWICK TAKES gbl cHAMPIONSHIP: Sisters Meg Delory and Eileen Delory carried the Crusaders to a team total of 137.0 and first place in the Greater Boston League Championships. Meg Delory was second in the all-around with a 35.5, taking first on beam (9.1), second on floor (9.2) and third on vault (8.5), while Eileen was third overall with a first on bars (8.9), second on beam (9.0), second on vault (8.55) and third on floor (8.9).
Fallon Anemoduris also performed well for the Crusaders, taking fourth on vault (8.35) and bars (7.7).
