For their academic achievements in the classroom and their athletic exploits in their respective fields, Salem High School boys basketball standout Sean Linehan and Danvers High School girls basketball superstar Kellie Macdonald have been named the Moynihan Lumber Student-Athletes of the Month for February.
Sean, the top ranked student in his senior class at Salem High, was a senior captain for the Witches' basketball team that won its first Division 2 North championship in 15 seasons and reached the state semifinals at the TD Garden in Boston. Sean was a valuable member of the team, averaging nine points and 10 rebounds a game while picking up his intensity level in the playoffs as his squad kept advancing. A two-time basketball captain who will also captain Salem's baseball team this spring, Sean was an honorable mention selected in both sports by The Salem News last year and also won the Coaches Award at both team banquets as a junior.
Owner of a 4.56 grade point average, Sean scored a highly impressive score of 28 on his ACT test. A two-year member of the National Honor Society, Sean has received the highest honors every quarter of his high school career and has achieved perfect attendance at Salem High throughout his four years there. He also finds time to volunteer and participate in community service as well as having a part-time job delivering newspapers. Sean is also a member of the History and Environmental Clubs at Salem High.
Kellie, a team co-captain this winter, helped lead the Falcons to their first-ever Northeastern Conference girls basketball crown. She played a huge role in that development, especially during the month of February when she averaged 17 points, 13.7 rebounds and 2.3 blocked shots per game. Kellie was moved MVP of the NEC Small division, and had perhaps her best game of the season by scoring 27 points, grabbing 12 rebounds, handing out seven assists, making three steals and blocking three shots in her club's title-clinching victory over arch rival Gloucester.
Ranked among the top 30 students in her senior class at Danvers High, Kellie sports a 3.6 grade point average and is currently taking an Advanced Placement statistics class. She is involved in numerous community service projects, such as Shooting Stars and has served as a 5th grade coach for the town's "March Madness" program the last three years.
