BOSTON — Millie Chapman of Beverly soared to a ninth place finish in the 5,000 meter race yesterday during the Nike Indoor Nationals at the Reggie Lewis Track & Field Center.
The Beverly High senior superstar finished the race in a time of 17:51. That shattered the mark of 18:36 she set last spring while running the same event outdoors.
"It was a huge improvement for Millie," said Beverly High head coach Dave Jellerson. "She was really happy with the race she ran."

Even with senior center Zach Zigelbaum returning to the Beverly boys basketball lineup last night, the Panthers found out Lynn English is very serious about pulling away for the Northeastern Conference North crown.
Some people might think fencing is an individual sport, but they don't think that way at St. John's Prep.
Head coach Jim Carter has taught his club that fencing is a team sport, because without everyone's contributions, a win would never be possible.
It is so difficult for any high school player to reach the 1,000 point mark, so its an even bigger feat to do it again in college. Former St. John's Prep star Ryan O'Connell accomplished it last weekend for Bowdoin College in a thrilling overtime victory on the road over NESCAC rival Williams, which is ranked 16th in the country.
Last February, fantasy players were dealt a surprising blow before Spring Training even really kicked into full swing. Cardinals ace Adam Wainwright, who finished second in the NL Cy Young race in 2010, required Tommy John surgery and just like that his 2011 season was over.
Tony O'Donnell has been named new Peabody lacrosse head coach after spending 11 years as assistant under Kevin Houlden, who stepped down at the end of last season. O'Donnell will have former Peabody High and Springfield College star Greg Welch as his assistant.
