Thursday's area roundup: Danvers swimming wins on the road

Danvers 97, Lynn English 89: The Falcons (5-1) won with a complete team effort last night as head coach Barbara Damon couldn’t have been more excited about the road victory.

“I told the kids on the bus that I was so proud and as swimmers they should be proud of themselves,” said Damon. “Everyone contributed and the hard work really showed. It’s great for us going into the conference meet with a win like this.”

Sophomore Josh Mentzer doubled in the 100 IM and 100 fly, while Tom Giannino won the 50 free and 100 free.

Lynn Classical 96, Salem 82: The Witches finished their season at 3-5, as senior Julie Nguyen qualified for states in the 100 breast stroke (1:15.68). Kevin Klein won the 100 fly and Melissa Trainor took first in the 500 free for Salem.

Marblehead 94, peabody 79: The Tanners (5-1-1) suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of undefeated Marblehead. The boy’s 200-yard freestyle relay team of Alex Guay, Pat Jwansowski, Zack Melville and Alex Strakosha won with a time of (1:41.74), while Strakosha won the 100 free (53.33)

Beverly 85, revere 69: Sarah Welch had double wins in the 200 free and 100 butterfly and was a member of the winning 200 and 400 free relay teams. Astrid Swensen was fist in the 100 back and 100 breast stroke as the Panthers move to 5-1-1. Nick Grabowski finished fist in the 200 IM, while Carli Blau won diving.


Peabody 73.67, Lynn Classical 12.3: The Tanners had wins in all but two events in their victory over Classical. First place finishers for Peabody (3-2) include; Rachel Barrett (high jump), Katie Gallo (shot), Hayley Dowd (45 dash), Heather MacLean (600), Carrera Dean (1000), Julia Merchant (mile) and Josie Pagliuca (2 mile).

Marblehead 62, Winthrop 24: The Magicians remain unbeaten in the conference at 4-0 and 4-1 overall as Mimi Goetz doubled in the 55 yard dash and shot put. Janaya Randall was fist in the mile, while Kathleen Huber won in the 1000.


Marblehead 76.5, Winthrop 9.5: Brian Neumann (55 hurdles), Teddy Camp (600), Will Pratt (mile) and Grahm Wheeler (2 mile) were among the top performers for Marblehead (2-3).

Peabody 74.5, Lynn Classical 11.5: Marcus Vieira (shot), Chris Cennami (45 dash), Vlasi Duni (300) and Kiefer Heckman (600) all had first place finishes for the Tanners (5-0). Other winners include Riley Dowd (1000), Eric Cordeiro (mile) and Manny Vieira (2 mile).


Marblehead/Swampscott 126, Bishop Fenwick 123.25: Freshman Erin Horgan placed first in the all-around (32.8) and first on floor (8.65) as the Crusaders drop to 2-2 on the season. Kristen Killcommons was third in the all-around (30.1) and second on floor with an 8.6 and Merissa Moschella placed third on floor (8.55). Sydney Levine freshman was first on vault (8.8) and beam (8.4) for Marblehead/Swampscott.


Salem State 100, Fitchburg 97: Bryan Ortiz dropped in 23 points as the Vikings win two straight. Tavone Wynder added 20 points and nine rebounds, while Andrew White and Hanell Velez each finished with 14 for Salem State (11-5).

University of New England 78, Endicott 76: John Henault finished with a team-high 24 points, but the Gulls couldn’t overcome their first half deficit. Andre Makris (six rebounds) added 21 points, while Lance Greene recorded 14.


Fitchburg State 85, Salem State 73: The Vikings fall to 8-9 as Rachael Carter had 25 points, seven rebounds, and five assists to lead her team in the loss. Bridget Dullea added 15 points and Sandra Lanier finished with 10, to go along with a team-high nine rebounds.

University of New England 63, Endicott 60: The Gulls (10-5) dropped a close one on the road after outscoring the host team in the second half. Jennifer White led the team with 15 points and Samantha Crough finished with 13.
