Ipswich distance ace Sarah Keiran and sprinter Robbie Fay earned supreme recognition from the Cape Ann League, as both Tigers were named CAL Small Athletes of the Year for indoor track last week.
Keiran, the league’s 1000 meter champion, also on the CAL girls cross country title and one of the more accomplished distance runners in the Bay State. She’ll run at Division 1 New Hampshire next year, was a two-time Division 6 Eastern Mass. Cross Country champion and finished seventh in the Division 2 All-State XC meet.
Fay had a tremendous indoor season running primarily the 300 for the Tigers, and also helped anchor the 4x400 relay team that helped the Tigers win the CAL Small dual meet title.
Ipswich coaches Marty Binette and Gardy O’Flynn was also named CAL Small Boys and Girls Coaches of the Year, respectively. The Ipswich girls, under O’Flynn, had an outstanding season and won both the CAL Small dual meet title and the girls CAL Open meet held last week at the Reggie Lewis Center.
Ipswich’s other league champions were Katie Monahan (hurdles), Jill Calvani (long jump) and the 4x800 and 4x400 relays.
Masconomet, led by league champions Kaleigh White (dash) and Lauren Drohosky (300), won the CAL Large dual meet title. The Masco girls won the 4x200 relay and the Cheiftain boys won the 4x200 and 4x400 relays.
Hamilton-Wenham’s league champ was Kerry Hull in the high jump.
Pentucket’s Steve Derro was the CAL Large Girls Coach of the Year while the Boys award went to Newburyport’s Tim Foley, who guided the Clippers to the CAL Open crown. North Reading’s John Braga, who won the league hurdles and high jump title, was CAL Large Boys Athlete of the Year while Kerstin Darsney of Triton won the honor for girls.
