Of Jon Berchoff’s career high 20 points last night, it was the 20th and final point that he scored that mattered most.
Driving the lane and getting fouled with a second to play, Berchoff sank a free throw to give host Beverly High a 63-62 triumph last night over Revere at the Henry Cabot Lodge Fieldhouse.
Berchoff, who also had seven assists, missed his second free throw attempt, but a last-gasp shot attempt by Revere fell short.
After a slugging third quarter, Beverly (13-5) changed its strategy and started going inside in the fourth quarter, drawing fouls and hitting their freebies.
Senior co-captain Cam Rogers had 14 points and six rebounds for Beverly while junior Nick Cross was also in double figures with 10 points. Another junior, Jonangel Franco, finished with nine for Beverly, which hosts Salem tomorrow night.
Peabody 51, North Shore Tech/Essex Aggie 50: The Tanners held off a second half push from North Shore Tech to improve to 6-13 overall. Senior Ben Martinez finished with a double-double on 10 rebounds and 11 points, while Brian Onessimo had strong game on both ends and finished with 12 points. Jared McCarron led all scorers with 19 points, while Matt Correale had three points and five assists.
The Bulldogs (3-15) held Peabody to 21 points in the second, but missed a last second shot to win the game. Elija Alfred had 11 points and eight rebounds, while Yordanny Sanchez finished with six points and eight rebounds.
St. John’s Prep 57, St. Mary’s 47: The Eagles (17-1) continue their dominate play putting up 28 points in the first half. Ben Judson finished with a game-high 18 points, Tyler Dooley added 15 points and Drex Costello contributed with 10 points.
Pingree 60, Winsor 21: Senior captain Katlyn Oliver recorded a game-high 16 points as the Highlanders improve to 11-8 overall. As a team Pingree shot 13 for 15 from the line and pulled down 29 rebounds overall. Senior Alex Kruck added a dozen points, while freshman Hanna Stasiuk finished with 10.
Revere 52, Beverly 37: Kate Silvestri led the Panthers (5-14) with eight points, while freshman Melissa Lubas recorded seven points in the loss. Hannah Silvestri, MaryCate Flaherty and Andrea Zelano each finished with five points apiece.
Lynn Classical 56, Salem 52: Jaclyn Panneton dropped in a team-high 20 points, but the Witches (6-10) dropped a close decision. Arianna Gaffney finished with 12 points, while Nicole Sadoway recorded eight.
Winthrop 7, Marblehead 1: Rachel McKay had the lone goal for the Lady Headers on an assist from Olivia Fusegni and Sydney Cresta. Goaltender Aly Hopkins made 18 saves in the loss.
SALEM 6, EVERETT 4: The Witches’ top line of Sam Petri, Spencer Bergholtz and Danny Heck combined for nine points, including five goals, to help their team win two out of three against the Crimson Tide this season. Petri had a pair of goals; Bergholtz had one and three assists while Heck finished with two goals and one helper. Salem (5-10-3) also got a goal from Jake Stahlman while teammate Eli Spector set the tone physically.
Swampscott 3, Revere 0: Freshman Devon Wall’s first varsity goal proved to be the game-winner as the Big Blue improved to 13-5. Fellow freshman Tristan Bradley stopped all nine shots that came his way for his third shutout. Corey Carmody (his 10th) and Nunzio Morretti (his 13th) also had goals for Swampscott while Trevor Massey and Chris Carman both had two assists.
Gloucester 2, Peabody 1: The Tanners (4-11-2) lost a tough one on the road after scoring first in the game. Reed Foster scored at the 9:20 mark of the opening period of an assist from Derek Demild and Ryan Carney. Joe Powers had 23 saves in the loss as Peabody outshot Gloucester 42-25.
Bishop Stang 2, Marblehead 1: The Headers (14-4) pelted Stang goaltender Ryan Hubert with 70 shots, but amazingly only got one by him, coming off the stick of senior Trip Franzese. Defenseman Liam Gillis and winger Tom Koopman assisted on the play, while Myles Barry had 17 saves in the Marblehead nets.
ST. JOHN’S PREP 8, BISHOP FENWICK 1: Jack McCarthy and Cam Shaheen both had hat tricks as the Eagles (15-2) rolled to a non-league victory in Peabody. Derek Osbahr and Paul Crehan also hit the back of the net for the winners. Brian Pinho and Justin Longo each added three assists while Tyler Bird, James Brightney and Crehan had two apiece. Anthony Selvitella made four saves in 25 minutes of work in goal for the win, while Doug Legere stopped all six shots he saw over the final 20 minutes of play.
Bishop Fenwick (3-15) got a first period shorthanded goal from Drew Thibodeau, with Nick Coccolutto and Jake Brennan assisting.
Pingree GIRLS SWEEP, BOYS DROP TWO: The Highlander girls defeated both Berwick (54-40) and Landmark (78-13) at the Gordon College pool in Wenham as freshman June Kiely had wins in the 200 IM (2:34.22) and 100 freestyle (1:02.67, a PR). Junior Erin Cunningham (50 free, 26.38) and the 200 medley relay team of Cunningham, junior Solina Powell, senior Veronica Monteiro and Kiely (2:08.71) all had first place finishes. In addition, Emma Brandt (500 free, 6:50.88) and fellow freshman Michaela Gimas (50 free, 42.59) both recorded personal bests.
Senior Nick Sweetser had a PR in winning the 100 free (57.03) as the Pingree boys fell to Berwick (58-20) and Landmark (55-21). Sophomore Sam Consitt (50 free, 25.93 and 100 free, 59.87) had two PRs as well.
