Wednesday's area roundup: Berchoff's free throw gives Beverly last-second victory over Patriots

BOYS BASKETBALL

Of Jon Berchoff’s career high 20 points last night, it was the 20th and final point that he scored that mattered most.

Driving the lane and getting fouled with a second to play, Berchoff sank a free throw to give host Beverly High a 63-62 triumph last night over Revere at the Henry Cabot Lodge Fieldhouse.

Berchoff, who also had seven assists, missed his second free throw attempt, but a last-gasp shot attempt by Revere fell short.

After a slugging third quarter, Beverly (13-5) changed its strategy and started going inside in the fourth quarter, drawing fouls and hitting their freebies.

Senior co-captain Cam Rogers had 14 points and six rebounds for Beverly while junior Nick Cross was also in double figures with 10 points. Another junior, Jonangel Franco, finished with nine for Beverly, which hosts Salem tomorrow night.

Peabody 51, North Shore Tech/Essex Aggie 50: The Tanners held off a second half push from North Shore Tech to improve to 6-13 overall. Senior Ben Martinez finished with a double-double on 10 rebounds and 11 points, while Brian Onessimo had strong game on both ends and finished with 12 points. Jared McCarron led all scorers with 19 points, while Matt Correale had three points and five assists.

The Bulldogs (3-15) held Peabody to 21 points in the second, but missed a last second shot to win the game. Elija Alfred had 11 points and eight rebounds, while Yordanny Sanchez finished with six points and eight rebounds.

St. John’s Prep 57, St. Mary’s 47: The Eagles (17-1) continue their dominate play putting up 28 points in the first half. Ben Judson finished with a game-high 18 points, Tyler Dooley added 15 points and Drex Costello contributed with 10 points.
