Thursday's area roundup: Navigators top Mavs in slugfest

If you’re looking for proof that the biggest out of a game isn’t always in the ninth innings, look at last night’s North Shore Navigators victory.

Blaise Lezynski threw home from the outfield and gunned down the tying run for the last out of the eighth and Kyle Gauthier pitched a perfect ninth as the Navs held on for a 9-8 win over Seacoast at home.

Lezynski went 2-for-4 and had a bases loaded triple to collect three RBI and Tim Hendricks enjoyed a 3-for-5 day with two RBI as North Shore build a 5-0 lead. Alex Markakis and Connor Biggio also had RBI. Ex-St. John’s Prep hurler Rob DiFranco got his first FCBL start and gave up three earned runs in four innings; Mike Weisman earned the win for North Shore and Joe Love also had a pair of hits and one RBI.

North Shore (23-20) had won seven of its last ten and has a 2 1/2 game lead to remain in third place in the FCBL with nine games to go. The top four qualify for the playoffs.

Masconomet 51, Ipswich 29: Hannah Kiernan was the only Chieftain in double-figures with 13 points as Masconomet used a balanced offensive attack to take the winner’s bracket final. Ipswich’s Masey Zegarowski was her teams high-scorer with 21 points.

Bishop Fenwick 44, Beverly 20: The Crusaders stayed alive in the elimination bracket thanks to 14 points from Kate Lipka, 12 from Gianna Pizzano and a nine-point effort from Colleen Corcoran. Beverly was led by Bridget Keaton (11 points) and Ashley Keaton (six). With the win, Fenwick advances to face Ipswich on Tuesday; the winner of that game plays Masco in the finals Wednesday and would need to defeat the Chieftains twice.
