Weekend area sports roundup: Prep hockey scores big road win over Hingham

BOYS HOCKEY

St. John's Prep 2, Hingham 1: In one of the most hostile high school hockey environments in Eastern Mass., St. John's Prep left the Pilgrim Arena Saturday with two things: Confidence and a well-earned victory.

The Eagles got a pair of goals from captain Sam Kurker and a 28-save performance from fellow senior David Letarte to knock off Hingham before a raucous crowd.

St. John's Prep (2-0-0) made the most of its 11 shots as Kurker's game-winner came 55 seconds into the third period. Taking a pass from junior Andrew Brandano, he gathered the puck in the slot and whipped a wrist shot past the Harbormen's John Grenier. The Boston University-bound Kurker already has five goals in two games.

Letarte — with help from defensemen such as Evan Leclerc and captain Nick Pandelena — held the fort from there, making several huge stops late in the third when Hingham pressed for the equalizer.

"It's a very difficult rink to play at. It's a small ice surface that Hingham is comfortable playing in; they chip pucks into your zone and shoot from all over the place," said Eagles head coach Kristian Hanson. "But I thought we did a nice job protecting the front of our net and not allowing good scoring chances by keeping most of their shots to the perimeter."

Masconomet 3, Newburyport 2: Matt Cardillo had a fantastic outing with 39 saves and Danny Crowther's second period tally proved to be the game-winner as the Chieftains improved to 2-0. Vincent Zingarelli added a goal and an assist for the hosts while Brian Hellrigel also scored. Alec DiGiorgio and Mike Dooley both chipped in with a pair of assists.

Marblehead 10, Lynn 1: Senior Austin Haley had a natural hat trick in the second period as the Headers scored nine times over the first 30 minutes of play to roll in their season opener. Sophomore Joe Newall contributed a pair of goals while junior Ty Bates had a goal and three assists. Dean Fader, Liam Gillis, Erik Powers and Cam Rowe also scored; Ian Maag dished out four assists; Gillis added two helpers; and senior goalie Mike Harper stopped 14 shots for the win.

ROCKPORT 4, sALEM 2: Paul DiMarino's goal 53 seconds into the third period gave the Witches (0-2) a 2-1 lead, but host Rockport tied the game just six seconds later and got the game-winner exactly one minute after that. Spencer Bergholtz also scored for Salem while Jake Stahlman and SamPetri had assists.

Austin Prep 6, bishop Fenwick 2: Andrew Young's goal three minutes into the game tied the score at 1-1, but visiting Austin Prep scored the next four goals to drop Fenwick to 0-2. Bobby Liberge also scored for the Crusaders while netminder Anthony Angelesco made 13 saves on 15 shots over the final two periods in relief.

Swampscott 2, Revere 2: Matt Videtta and Corey Carmody put Swampscott ahead by two goals in the first period, but the Big Blue couldn't hang on. Chris Carman, Trevor Massey, Gino Cresta and Robert Serino each had assists for Swampscott (1-0-1), which controlled play throughout.

GIRLS HOCKEY

Olivia Konaxis notched two assists, Katie Szela and Allyson Spencer had one apiece, and Jenna LoVasco made 14 saves in net for the shutout.

Marblehead drops a pair: The Lady Headers lost their first two games of the season, falling on the road to both Cambridge (5-1) on Saturday and Winthrop (5-2) yesterday. Meg Gray scored Marblehead's only goal against Cambridge, while Emmarose Winder and Rachel McKay had the goals yesterday.
