The St. John’s Prep alpine ski team topped the field in the giant slalom at the state championships held at Berkshire East Ski Area earlier this week, but the Eagles finished second in slalom and wound up ceding first-place overall to rival Xaverian by just five points.
The Eagles finished second in the state with 535 points while the Hawks took home the title with 540.
It was a successful outing for the Prep, which had four skiers in the top-20 in the giant slalom led by junior Ryan Carlucci’s third place time of 43.82.
Junior Bobby Holmes followed in 10th (45.30) while sophomores Patrick McDermitt and Cael Schawrtz ran 16th and 18th, respectively.
In the slalom, Carlucci was the Prep’s top finisher at 13th, followed by Holmes in 19th and freshman Peter Griffen’s 25th place effort.
Marblehead’s boys enjoyed an outstanding competition, with Charlie Thompson finishing as the runner-up in the slalom with a time of 35.07, just half-a-second off the winning time. Kyle Maulden was 10th in the event at 36.08 and also finished 20th in the giant slalom. The results put the Magicians at 8th place overall in the boys competition.
Tyler Brown and Nate Houston were Masconomet’s top skiers in both the slalom and giant slalom. The Chieftains wound up 15th among the 25 teams competing with 310 team points.
The Marblehead girls team finished fifth as a team with 470 total points. Audrey Meakin led the Magicians in the giant slalom with a 20th place time of 46.68 and Sydney Andrews was 24th in 46.98. Leah Harris and Haley Andrews also ran the giant slalom for Marblehead.
Sydney Andrews added a top-10 finish in the slalom, with her time of 38.64 good for seventh place. Meakin followed in 29th.
Nichol Brown and Heather Gaskell competed for the Masconomet girls, finishing 50th and 56th overall in the giant slalom.
