Bulldogs fall in regular season finale

By Jean DePlacido

---- — MIDDLETON — Senior Day at Barry Field began with the traditional presentation of flowers to mothers of football players and cheerleaders, but it was all downhill from there as Northeast Regional handed the Bulldogs a 30-6 defeat.

It was the third loss of the season (8-3) for the Commonwealth Conference Small champs, who never led. The visiting Knights (7-4) used 10 different backs, who combined for 307 yards on 48 carries.

“The bottom line is we got out coached today,” said North Shore coach Paul Worth. “We didn’t have a great game plan. I thought we could throw all day on them. We had receivers open all game, but didn’t throw or catch well.

“They’re a very physical team, one of the bigger we’ve faced all season, and their offensive line handled us. They lost to two teams we beat, but I guess this was a question of not matching up well with them.”

Bulldogs quarterback Tim Anderson completed five of 11 pass attempts for 54 yards, but threw two interceptions and his receivers dropped several passes that were right on the mark.

“The final outcome was dictated by turnovers,” said Northeast coach Don Heres. “We played physical Northeast football and pounded people the way we like to. We have big linemen, and they had an impact. I went back to the roots today. They’re going to the playoffs, and we’re not. We wanted to make our point, and do it for our seniors.”

Things started going wrong for the Bulldogs early. Their opening drive stalled at the Knights 31-yard line when Ross Murphy was stopped after a short gain on fourth down. Northeast scored nine plays later when Christian Perez barreled in from a yard out, and Troy Tartarini passed to Israel Silva for the extra points.

The Bulldogs threatened again the next time they had the ball, but on first down at the Northeast 26-yard line Anderson’s pass was intercepted by Marvey Mathurin, and the Knights drove down the field to stretch the lead to 14-0 after Tartarini’s 1-yard QB sneak.

The ensuing kickoff by Alejandro Arrano went sideways for only a 2-yard gain, setting North Shore up at the opponent’s 37-yard line, but Tyler Skane fumbled after catching a short pass, and the Knights recovered. It was another example of North Shore’s inability to finish drives and put points on the board.

The lone Bulldog score came late in the first half when Anderson rushed for 10 yards, and on the next play crashed into the end zone from a yard out. Anderson was the leading rusher with 59 yards on eight carries.

The Bulldogs defense had trouble stopping the punishing ground game of the visitors, who controlled the ball for most of the second half and tacked on 16 unanswered points in the fourth quarter. The lone bright spot was the play of sophomore linebacker Dan Bailey, who made several big tackles for no gain or losses.

“We’ve lost before and bounced back,” Worth said. “We’ve got to do it again. We went with our spread offense today, but we didn’t run the ball well. We’ll take a long look at what went wrong, and figure out a good game plan for the playoffs.”

North Shore is back in the MIAA playoffs for the first time since 2004 and will face a tough Cathedral team next Tuesday in a Division 4A matchup.
