Area roundup: Salem State men fall in Classic final


Brandeis 78, Salem St. 61: The host Judges held off Salem State to win the final of the New England Big Four Classic Sunday afternoon. All-Tournament team selection Andrew White scored 15 points and Tavone Wynder added 12, but Brandeis hit 21 free throws and used a 52-37 advantage on the glass to win. Tournament MVP Gabe Moton scored 19 for Brandeis.

The Vikings (3-3) topped Babson, 80-69, on Saturday to advance to the Classic final. Justin Nieves’ 22-point effort paved the way for the win.


bABSON 68, sALEM sTATE 52: The Lady Vikings (3-1) suffered their first loss of the season at Twohig Gymnasium yesterday. Rachael Carter led Salem State with 16 points, four assists and four rebounds but the hosts trailed by seven at the break and were limited to 28 percent shooting from the floor by the Babson defense. Bridget Dullea had five steals, six boards and 11 points for SSU and Ginny Fleming had nine rebounds.


Conn. College 4, Salem State 2: The Vikings (2-2-1) fell behind 3-0 on the road and though Kyle Phelan had a goal and an assist to get his team back in it, the hosts scored an empty netter to put the game away. Chad Goodwin scored his third of the year for Salem State and Khalid Devji made 25 saves in his first start of the season.
