The Hamilton-Wenham girls and boys cross country teams competed against some of the best runners in the Northeast Saturday, running at Nike’s Cross Country Regionals held at Bowdoin Park in Wappingers Falls, New York.
The Generals girls placed 11th out of 27 teams in the championship race, which included the top teams and runners from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, Vermont, Rhode Island and New Hampshire.
Sophomore Emily Weigand was Hamilton’s top individual finisher, running 19:31 to finish 27th out of 216 runners. Junior Emily Horgan was 54th in 20:10, senior Claire Paccione was 110th in 21:01, freshman Meghan Stone was 116th in 21:05 and senior Sarah Duffy was 127th in 21:18. Seniors Caroline Goodrich (21:11) and Meg Blatchford (21:26) also ran for H-W.
“It was a very strong performance by the girls,” said Generals coach Steve Sawyer. “We’ve been to this meet three years in a row and competition keeps getting better. The talent there was outstanding this year, and with two young teams we had a strong showing.”
Junior Matt Gillis earned a medal by finishing tenth in the open race with a time of 17:27. Sophomores Jack Blatchford (18:34, 80th) and Michael Allara (18:36, 82nd) also ran in the open boys race, which featured 303 runners.
