Area roundup: Unbeaten WPI holds off late Salem State charge

WPI 74, Salem State 70: Unbeaten WPI opened a 22-point lead early in the second half and while the Vikings (4-4) closed the gap they couldn’t come all the way back. Justin Nieves had 15 points and Nate Simpson had a strong game on the glass with 20 total rebounds and 15 points. Hannel Velez gave the Vikes a nice lift off the bench with 16 points and Andrew White chipped in 12.

Gordon 72, Wheaton 65: The Scots (2-3) snapped a two-game mini-skid, powered by Taylor Bajema’s 19 points and eight rebounds. Gordon had four players reach double figures including Hans Miersma (10 points, game-best 18 rebounds), David Dempsey (12 points) and Park Thomas (13 points including 8-of-10 from the free throw line).

WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Southern Maine 83, Salem State 61: Southern Maine, ranked No. 23 nationally in Division 3, took care of Salem State at home to remain unbeaten. Rachael Carter had 16 points and four assists for the Lady Vikings (4-4) while Rachel Ledbetter was the only other player in double figures with 10.

COLLEGE SWIMMING

BSU sweeps Gordon: Gordon fell to Bridgewater State in their last meet of the first semester with the women losing 143-101 and the men falling 143-113. The Scots still had plenty of strong performances, with freshman Emily David setting two school records.

David broke the 12-year old 50 back record by swimming 30.22 and also set the 100-IM mark in 1:05.81. Also for Gordon, Kahterine Zablocki won the 50 (34.40) and 100 (1:14.82) breast and Nicole St. Martin won the 50 fly (31.50).

Austin Drukker won the 1000 free (11:34.08) and the 100 back (1:01.60) and Joshua Florez won the 50 (30.41) and 100 (1:06.39) breast. Andrew Lewis took the 500 free (5:31.48) while Brett Johnson (100 fly, 1:01.24) and Cameron Schofield (50 free, 24.23) were also winners.
