Weekend area roundup: Salem State baseball sweeps Worcester State

SSU Sweeps: Ryan Hyjek and Cato Lacroix threw back-to-back shutouts as the Vikings blanked Worcester State 4-0 and 1-0 in both ends of a Saturday doubleheader. Hyjek allowed just one hit in the first game while Lacroix allowed just three hits in the second game as SSU bumped its overall record to 6-8. Mike Lamothe had an RBI and Ethan Trowt had a run scored in the opener. Kyle McElroy had the lone RBI for SSU in the second game.

GULLS SPLIT: Brett Holmgren ripped a bases loaded RBI single as the Gulls (8-5) walked off with a 2-1 win in the second game of a doubleheader after falling 8-4 to Husson in the opener. Holmgren had both RBI while Jon Branch allowed one unearned run on three hits in six innings of work in the second game. Harry Oringer and Taylor English had two hits and a RBI each in the opener.


Eastern Conn. State 21, SALEM STATE 5: Ben Melaugh, A.J. Robertson, Kyle Dolan, Ryan Savini and Max Gansenberg had a goal each but the Vikings dropped to 5-2.

Wesleyan 15, Gordon 1: Jordan Heckelmann scored Gordon’s only goal as the Scots dropped to 1-8.


Westfield State 16, SALEM STATE 8: Bridget Dullea led the Vikings with three goals and an assist but SSU fell to 1-4. Kelsey Russell and Lauren DeLuca added two goals each.


Vikings split: Salem State opened the first game of a doubleheader with Worcester State with a 2-1 win before falling 5-2 in the night cap to move to 6-8 overall. After falling behind in the first game Stephanie Schieni ripped an RBI double that scored Paige Fleming in the fifth before Christina Cipriani knocked in Sarra Bergeron for the game-winning run in the eighth. In the second game, Jenn Toussiant had a RBI and scored a run on a passed ball.


UMass Dartmouth 9, SALEM STATE 0: The Vikings remain winless at 0-6.


Gulls Split: After falling 5-4 to Mount Holyoke the Gulls rallied to down Smith by a score of 8-1 to move to move to 15-3. Sarah Hill, Savannah Deady, senior Rachel Fenstermaker, senior Gina Pinciaro and Natalie Egbert all had singles wins against Smith.


Endicott 3, Daniel Webster 0: The Gulls swept their opponent 25-18, 25-15, 25-15 to improve to 18-8 overall and a perfect 10-0 in the New England Collegiate Conference. John Osborne had 10 kills and Carter Roche added 27 assists.

Winchester 17, Bishop Fenwick 7: The Crusaders opened the season with a non-league loss at home Saturday. Annette Ruggiero had three goals while Anna Moulton and Grace Celona scored two each.
