Area roundup: Peabody baseball starts with win over defending state champs

Sophomore Ryan Collins went 2-for-3 on the day, including a two RBI, two out single in the sixth inning, which proved to be the game winning hit as Peabody escaped with a 3-2 victory over defending Division 1 state champion Xaverian.

The shortstop also recorded the final four outs to preserve the 3-2 lead.

“To drive all the way to Xaverian and walk away with a win is a very exciting way to start our season,” said head coach Mark Bettencourt. “In my opinion we open with the best two teams in the state and have the Prep on Saturday. It definitely gives us confidence going forward.”

Andrew McLaughlin picked up the win, going five innings for the Tanners, while David Apostolides picked up the save. Catcher Brandon Polignone was very strong defensively, throwing out three base runners in the game.

Masconomet 6, Haverhill 1: The Chieftains picked up a win in new head coach T.J. Baril’s debut. Speros Varinos was sharp on the mound, striking out the first seven batters he faced and finishing with 11 Ks over 4 1/3 innings. He allowed three hits, walked one and surrendered one earned run. Tommy Budrewicz worked the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing one hit and striking out two.

Joe Klingensmith led the offense with two hits and two RBI, and Varinos, Will Twiss and Greg Dougherty each had two hits and one RBI.

agateHed:GIRLS LACROSSE

Notre Dame 18, Bishop Fenwick 4: Annette Ruggiero scored three times to lead Fenwick, but the Crusaders ran into a powerhouse. Grace Celona added one goal and one assist and Vicky Caruso also scored. Katie Hart, Jackie Hart, and Monica Poeske played well for Fenwick (1-2).

peabody 15, north shore tech 2: The Tanners improve to 2-0 on the season as senior Bianca Muscato netted three goals and two helpers. Nicole Napolitano added five goals and an assist, Courtney Smith had two goals and an assist, while Sarah Napolitano added a pair of goals and two assists. Victoria Digiacomo and Christa Trombley played well defensively.
