Area roundup: Peabody baseball starts with win over defending state champs


Salem 15, Lowell 5: The Witches exploded for 15 goals behind four goals and six assists from Alexa Gilbert and six goals from Emily Coelho. Courtney Maurice (1 goal, 6 assists) and Shayna Hall (1-4) also had big offensive games while Xhulia Kanani, Kristina Leblanc, and Lia Buonfiglio had one goal apiece.

Philine Peperkamp chipped in with two assists and senior goalie Danielle Pynn made 13 saves for Salem (1-0).


Groton 10, Pingree 2: The Highlanders got a goal and an assist from both Jerome Cappadona and Max Trotsky as they dropped their opener.


Swampscott 4, Masconomet 1: For the Big Blue, No. 1 singles player sophomore Anna Raptunavich defeated her opponent 7-5, 6-0. Freshman Vivien Gere won her match in the No. 2 singles spot 6-0, 6-1 and Veronica Pyatigorskaya, who played doubles last year, has moved into the No. 3 singles position and won her first match 6-0, 6-1. Head coach Nina Rogers was very impressed with the effort of her team.

The Chieftains’ only point in their opener came from senior captains Alexa Ina and Emily Miller at second doubles (6-2, 6-2).


Marblehead 70, Beverly 61: Kelly Roland, Mimi Goetz and Julia Lothrop went 1-2-3 in the javelin to close out the meet and give the Magicians the victory. Other Marblehead winners included Alyssa Nye (100), Janaya Randall (2-mile), Anna Barrell (mile), Lily Cummings (high jump) and the 4x100 team of Lothrop, Goetz, Kaitlin McCarthy and Monica Thorne.

Though the Panthers dropped their opening meet, they had four double winners. Kristen O’Connor took the low hurdles (68.7) and triple jump (33.1), Kendall Davy was first in the high hurdles (16.9) and 200 (27.6), Cailtlin Harty won the 400 (59.9) and long jump (14-10 1/2) and Nicole Kirch took the shot (30-1) and the discus (96-11 1/2).

Salem 61, Winthrop 61: Salem and Winthrop were unable to compete in the javelin because the field was not lined, so the two teams had to settle for a tie in the season opener. Joy Lima won the 100, 200 and triple jump to lead the Witches. Morgan Rogers added a win in the long jump and Natasha Demers, Lishbeht Ramos, Emma Woolhiser and Villory Rijker teamed up to win the 4x100 relay.
