Beverly girls start fast, down Danvers

DANVERS – Beverly shot out to an early lead en route to an 11-4 victory over Danvers yesterday afternoon. The Panthers are off to a great start, winning their first two games. They got a balanced scoring attack led by Liz Musumeci, who had three goals and two assists. Seven different players scored goals for Beverly with Grace Otterbein and Camden Vitale each scoring twice.

The Panthers quickly built up a 4-1 lead on goals by Meghan Henrichon, Vitale, Grace Otterbein, and Musumeci. By halftime Beverly had a commanding, 8-1 lead after Musumeci, Alyssa Cecchini, Abbey Carnevale, and Felicity Otterbein all found the back of the net.

Carnevale was set up right in front of Danvers goalie Kara Conners after taking a perfect pass from Grace Otterbein, and fired a high shot over her shoulder. The Panthers used their speed and passing skills to move the ball around and find the open person.

“We wanted to go at them early and often to take control,” said coach Alyson Healey. “Our goal was to play a strong game in all three zones. This game is all about ball possession, and that is something we tried to emphasize in practice and before the game began.”

Panther goalie Ami Thompson made some outstanding saves in the first half before giving way to Hindi Aljahri after intermission.

“From the goalie out everyone did their job,” said Healey. “This was a complete team effort, and all the players contributed. Offensively and defensively we have to play as a team. The kind of effort we got today it what we are going to need every game. We have a lot of younger players, who are fitting into their roles. This was a good win.”

Musumeci scored her third goal of the afternoon to put Beverly up, 9-1 before Danvers rallied with three quick scores in less than two minutes. Rachel Trocchi, Caitlin Tivnan, and Katie Szela all scored. It was Szela’s second of the game.
