FIELD HOCKEY
Swampscott 2, Salem 1: It was a season-opening contest that both the Salem and Swampscott High field hockey teams wanted to win when they faced each other yesterday afternoon.
But more than the final outcome, both clubs will remember what happened before the game was even played.
Prior to the game, both teams honored Julia Gauthier of Salem, who was killed in an automobile accident March 21.
"I've known Julia and her family for many years, so I was able to talk about her," said Swampscott High head coach Toby Channen, whose team won the ensuing contest, 2-1. "It's in the spirit of good sportsmanship to share winning and losing, as well as grief. The field hockey family is a small family and we have to stick together.
"Julia's mother, Marie, spoke articulately about the lessons to be learned from the tragedy. It was an eloquent, emotional, heartfelt speech. She was wonderful."
