Monday's area sports roundup: Ives answers the Belle with 5 goals for unbeaten Masconomet

---- — With the eyes of potential college coaches upon her yesterday, Masconomet senior field hockey star Belle Ives showed why she’s among the top talents on the North Shore.

Ives, a senior left inner, scored five goals to lead the unbeaten Chieftains to a 9-1 rout over Cape Ann League foe Pentucket yesterday morning in West Newbury.

“Belle has constant dedication to the sport,” said Masconomet head coach Leah Gunner, who noted that several college coaches were on hand to watch the CAL All-League performer yesterday. “She loves it and is constantly practicing and thinking about field hockey. She gives way more than 110 percent at every practice and every game. You hardly ever see her without a stick and ball, practicing some aspect of the game.”

Junior Paige Boucher added two goals for the Chieftains (11-0-1) while senior captains Maddie Doyle and Julianna Kotsas also scored. Senior defender Cat Hosman also had a stellar game, particularly on her passes up the right side, according to Gunner.

iPSWICH 0, rOCKPORT 0: Despite several excellent scoring chances throughout the afternoon, the Tigers (11-2-1) couldn’t get one into the Rockport cage and had to settle for a scorless tie.

Newburyport 3, Hamilton-Wenham 0: Junior Rachel Holappa played well offensively for the Generals (4-9-1), while fellow junior Maggie Burns also had a strong game at midfield.

Manchester Essex 2, Amesbury 0: Senior Rachael Gallagher had a goal and an assist to power the Hornets (12-0-2). Senior captain Taylor Meek also scored while junior Hailey Malloy earned the shutout in goal, her sixth of the season.

MEDFIELD 1, BISHOP FENWICK 0: The Crusaders dropped to 8-6 on the season with a non-league home setback.


Ipswich 2, Amesbury 1: Emily Evans and Devin Smith had the goals while Katie Monahan added an assist to propel the Tigers (6-3-5) to within three points of a playoff berth. Midfielders Joanna Perry and Emily Folan controlled their area both in the air and on the ground for the winners.

Hamilton-Wenham 1, Triton 0: One goal was all the Generals (9-2-2) needed as they clinched a playoff berth on the road.


Ipswich 6, Amesbury 1: Zack Eliopolous and Sam Benford each buried a pair of goals as the Tigers (7-7) routed winless Amesbury in Cape Ann League play. Cam Waters, Ryan Fantasia and Hayden Weatherall were also standouts for Ipswich in victory.

Malden Catholic 2, Bishop Fenwick 1: Jim Brophy, a junior midfielder, scored on a pass from Alex Baker in the first half for Fenwick (5-6-5). Goalkeeper Ryan Trott added a half-dozen saves for Fenwick, which needs five of a possible eight points in its final four games to qualify for postseason play.

LYNN CLASSICAL 3, BEVERLY 1: The Panthers (7-6) saw their four-game winning streak snapped, falling to the Rams on the road.

Hamilton-Wenham 3, Triton 0: The Generals (6-2-5) moved to within three points of earning a postseason berth by blanking the Vikings at home.
