---- — Editor’s note: “Hidden Gems” will take a look at a few of the weekend’s under-the-radar performers in North Shore high school football:
Swamspcott Wide Receiver
One of the Big Blue’s four captains, Faulkner set the stage for his team’s near-upset with outstanding catch-and-run displays on the first play of the game and the last play of regulation Saturday against Gloucester. He began the game by taking a screen pass 56 yards deep into Gloucester territory. Then on the final play, he made the grab and cut across the field for a 28-yard gain that nearly but the Big Blue in position for a game-winning field goal try before time ran out. Faulkner finished with four catches for 104 yards, making him the first player in three weeks to join the area’s ‘Century Club’ for receiving yardage.
Bishop Fenwick Tight End/Linebacker
A perfect example of statistics telling the true story of a player’s importance to his team, Traversey was a beast Saturday night at Manning Field in Lynn as the Crusaders thumped St. Mary’s, 34-6. He caught the only pass thrown his way for 9 yards, but also grabbed a 2-point conversion pass to give his club a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter. More importantly, Traversey helped seal the edge all night and threw some terrific downfield blocks, allowing Fenwick to pile up 374 yards of offense. The senior captain also helped clog the middle of the gridiron defensively and stuffed the Spartans’ running attack.
Beverly Tight End/Safety
Showing more and more consistency with each passing week, Mulumba was a presence at two spots offensively as well as in the defensive backfield last Friday against Lynn English. Pressed into service as a tight end this season, the senior captain also saw some time at his ‘normal’ position as a split end in the Panthers’ offensive scheme and made some critical blocks in a position he’s comfortable in. Having moved from outside linebacker to safety earlier this fall, Mulumba didn’t allow any big plays against an English team that’s full of speedy big play receivers.
