BY THE NUMBERS

The Boston Red Sox are once again in the World Series, taking on the St. Lous Cardinals for Major League Baseball’s biggest prize. So what were the best high school football games played while the Sox were chasing hardball immortality the last five times they played in the Fall Classic?

2007: The Sox swept the Rockies in four games, so there was only one weekend of high school football. Salem edged Peabody, 20-14, in overtime in the weekend’s closest game, while Bishop Fenwick and St. John’s Prep scored wins over league foes St. Mary’s and Catholic Memorial, respectively.

2004: Peabody scored an exciting 46-44 win over Cambridge in a game that featured eight lead changes and was won on a John Studley rushing TD in the final minute on the eve of Game 1 against the Cardinals. Other memorable scores include Swamspcott 27-13 win over Salem and Hamilton-Wenham’s 20-15 triumph over North Reading.

1986: On the night of the now-infamous Game 6 against the Mets, Salem edged Marblehead, 10-8, in a game between the NEC’s two best teams that year. Masconomet also earned its only win that day, 20-6 over North Reading.
