For their exploits both in the classroom and on the athletic fields, North Shore Tech/Essex Aggie football standout Dan Bailey and Manchester Essex field hockey star Brittany Smith have been named the Moynihan Lumber Student-Athletes of the Month for October.
Dan, a junior captain, helped lead the Bulldogs to their third straight Commonwealth Athletic Conference Small championship and into the state playoffs this fall. As a middle linebacker, he led the defense with 50 tackles (12 unassisted), including three for loss, and also intercepted a pass. North Shore Tech/Essex Aggie only allowed 21 points during that time. As a running back Dan also scored three touchdowns and added four 2-point conversions; he also provided outstanding blocking for fellow running back Ross Murphy (8 TDs, 7 conversion rushes in October). Dan is ranked 21st in his class academically and has a terrific 4.098 grade-point average. A constant honor roll student since entering North Shore Tech, he is also an outstanding masonry student.
Brittany, a senior at Manchester Essex, is a team captain for the field hockey team, which is ranked No. 2 in the Division 2 North playoffs. She is her team’s leading scorer and a force at all times on the field despite constantly being marked by the other teams’ best defenders. Holding an amazing 4.52 grade point average, Brittany is an Honors student who takes three honors classes and two Advanced Placement courses. She is also a member of the Manchester Essex school band and must attend that class once a week. She will also be a captain for the Hornets’ girls ice hockey team this winter, as well as for the school’s girls lacrosse team in the spring.
