The pool play portion of the District 15 Little League all-star tournament is complete, and four remaining teams will begin battling for the 2014 D15 flag tomorrow at Harry Ball Field in Beverly.
Pool 1 winner Hamilton-Wenham, which is 5-0 so far in the tournament, will face Pool 2 runner-up Gloucester American (4-1) in the second game tomorrow at 7:30; Pool 2 winner Beverly (5-0) will face Pool 1 runner-up Danvers American (3-2) in the first game at 5:30.
The tournament continues in a double-elimination format, with all the games at Harry Ball Field. Monday, the winners and losers of Saturday’s games will play each other. The winner of the winners’ game Monday goes to the District final schedule for Thursday and would have to be defeated twice; the other remaining teams play Tuesday for the right to advance.
Hamilton-Wenham won Pool 1 by winning all of their games with a total of 75 runs scored and 12 runs allowed. Danvers American got the nod over Middleton (also 3-2) by virtue of Danvers’ superior run differential (34 scored and 28 allowed compared to Middleton’s 28 scored and 33 allowed), and win over Middleton on Wednesday.
Unbeaten Beverly, which beat H-W in the District 15 final last summer, scored 73 runs and allowed 17 while toppling then-unbeaten Gloucester American 9-8 on Wednesday. Gloucester’s Amerks scored 50 runs and allowed 18.
The four advancing teams were assigned spots in the double-elimination knockout round by a blind draw conducted by District 15 officials Wednesday night. The District 15 champion advances to the Section 4 tournament, being hosted by Tewskbury this year, against the winners of Districts 13, 14 and 16. The Section 4 champ gets a spot in the state Final Four, being hosted by Beverly’s Harry Ball Field this summer.
The traditional Challenger exhibition game will also take place at 5:30 Thursday, before the District 15 final.
