COLLEGE BASEBALL
The Salem State baseball team was ranked No. 6 in New England earlier this week. The Viking bats, though, were not satisfied.
Salem State poured on 11 runs in the second inning and rode the huge frame to a 19-2 win over Lasell in Waltham yesterday.
Nick Conti, Matt Burgess and Brett Cahill all had three hits in the Vikings' 5-6-7 spots in the batting order. Conti homered and scored three runs while Cahill and Chris Cocci each collected a team-best three RBI. Eric Junker, Burgess and Steve Buitkus each had two RBI.
Ryan Hyjek limited the hosts to just four hits and one earned run over six innings to earn the win on the hill for Salem State, which improves to 13-5.
Gordon 22, Rivier 3: The Scots' bats were hot with 24 total hits in a dominant victory. Dillon Coleman had a tremendous day with four hits and four RBI while James Burrell also drove in four runs. Carlos Pichardo had four hits and Kris Camielo, John Brownell and Brian Harrington all had two hits.
WOMEN'S COLLEGE LACROSSE
Salem State 10, Mount Ida 7: Kaitlyn Shidler recorded a hat trick for Vikings (2-1) while snatching up five ground balls, which was the second highest on the team next to the 11 scooped up by Bridget Dullea (Peabody). Dullea added two goals, an assist and a team high seven draw controls while keeper Molly Blewett made 14 saves and had nine groundballs in the win.
COLLEGE SOFTBALL
Gulls Sweep Nichols: Ipswich native Kelley Michael launched a three-run homer for the first of her collegiate career to spark a four-run fifth inning as Endicott captured game one 9-1 before besting Nichols 5-0 in the night cap. Cam Sprague allowed just one run to earn the win and move to 2-2 on the season while Michael was a perfect 3 for 3 with four RBI and a run scored. In game two, Nell O'Connor earned her first win of the season tossing seven shutout innings. Alexandra Moise was 2 for 4 in game two with a pair of RBI including a sacrafice squeeze bunt that plated Jesse Bilafer.
SSU SPLITS: A Sarra Bergeron bunt scored Lauren DiCredico in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Vikings a 5-4 win over Plymouth State. The Pioneers rallied in the second game to down SSU 7-0. Alyssa Bryan pitched all nine innings to earn the win in the opener while Nicole Wilson suffered the loss in game two. The Vikings move to 12-6 on the season.
MEN'S COLLEGE TENNIS
Endicott 5, Salem State 4: Evan Ross won the final match in three sets to lift the Gulls (5-6) to a win over local rival Salem State (2-3). The team of Olivier Joggi/Ben Randlett and Porter Williams/Ross won doubles matches for Endicott and Joggi also won a singles match. Josh Giller and Rob Random won at doubled for Salem State and Matt Lee won a No. 2 doubles.
