Weekend area roundup: Navs win fourth in a row

Navs sweep twinbill: North Shore extended its win streak to four by beating Nashua twice yesterday, 2-0 and 6-1. The Navs (22-18) have won eight of their last ten and got stellar pitching yesterday, with Jake Brandenberger going the distance with eight strikeouts and the shutout in the first game, and all-star Derek Dubois going six innings with seven strikeouts in the nightcap.

Calvin Graves’ RBI in the sixth of the first game broke a late scoreless tie to lift North Shore, while Alex Markakis, Tim Hendricks, Pat Raley and Devin Carter drove in runs in the second game.


Middleton 3, Billerica 2: The top team in District 8 took the opener of their District Playoffs in eight innings. Middleton advances to face Lowell in the four-team, double-elimination bracket; two more wins would put them in the state playoffs which begin next weekend.


Beverly 6, Bistany 4: The Recs officially clinched a playoff berth with the victory, improving to 14-10-1.

North Shore 2, Peabody Champions 0: Kyle Shepard threw a shutout as the first place Phillies moved to 18-3 on the season while Pub fell to 15-7.

Swampscott takes two: Teaghan Malionek hit a grand slam to help the Sox beat North Reading in a doubleheader, 6-4 and 10-0. Ben Kendrew, Colby Boulay and Matt Burnham combined on a no-hitter for Swampscott (11-12).


Hamilton-Wenham 5, Danvers 4: The Generals took 2-out-of-3 to advance in the playoffs by beating Danvers 6-5 and 5-4. Connor Kelleher struck out four and drove in two runs for Danvers in the first game while Ryan Heber scored twice and Joe Jones and Billy Price each had RBI. Andrew Dunn struck out six in the second game.
