2013 Salem News Girls Basketball All-Stars

2013 Salem News Girls Basketball Player of the Year

Ipswich, Sophomore

It's absolutely astonishing to think that Ipswich point guard Masey Zegarowski is only a sophomore. Though every season so far she's elevated her game to new heights, we have another two years to watch her grow.

The 16-year-old has been around basketball most of her life, with her older brother Michael Carter-Williams Final Four bound at Syracuse and her mother Mandy Carter-Zegarowski as head coach of the Tigers. It's evident that her basketball IQ is right up there with some of the top players in the state.

"Masey is a true point guard with great court vision," said Carter-Zegarowski. "She is a pass first point guard, who takes care of the ball and makes the extra pass."

Named the Cape Ann League Small Player of the Year, Zegarowski was often double and triple teamed by defenders as most of the Ipswich offense runs through her hands. She never let that stop her, finishing as the second leading scorer in the area by averaging 14.7 points per game and second in the area in 3-pointers made with 54.

"Masey loves making her teammates better and her ability to control the game gained her the respect of other coaches in the league who voted her co-player of the year," Caster-Zegarowski said.

Since Zegarowski started her career at the Ipswich, the Tigers have gone 37-9 with her running the point. She averaged 5.1 assists and 3.1 steals per game this season.

Salem, Sophomore

It was a standout year for Panneton, who averaged 12.9 points and led the Witches in rebounding ... NEC all-star holds a 3.8 GPA and plans to play basketball in college ... Best game came against Lynn English in which she helped Salem take the Bulldogs to overtime ... Also lifted the Witches to victory over Saugus, with a 24-point, 14-rebound performance ... Credits her dad as her biggest influence, for always being their with support and constructive criticism to help.
