Peabody Senior Softball all-stars fall to Connecticut

The Salem News

---- — The Peabody Little League Williamsport Fast Pitch Softball all-stars lost to Connecticut, 10-3, yesterday in the third game of pool play at the New England Regional Tournament in Worcester.

The Massachusetts state champs fell to 0-3 and were eliminated from any possibility to move on to the finals. Peabody plays their final game today against Rhode Island.

Shannon Pires started and pitched a good game for Peabody, with Sara Hayward coming on for a scoreless sixth inning.

The game was tied at 2-2 going into the fifth inning and Peabody was threatening with runners on second and third when Shelbi Wilson hit a flare over the shortstop’s head. The umpire, however, ruled the Peabody runner on second had interfered with the infielder and called her out, ending the threat.

“That hit by Shelbi would have scored two runs to give us the lead, but instead our girl was called out to end the inning,” said Peabody manager Bill Hayward. “That was a tough play for us; the two barely brushed. Connecticut opened it up in the bottom of the inning after a couple of walks and errors by us combined with a couple of hits.”

Defensively for Peabody, Ashley Ghostlaw was outstanding at shortstop and Meghan Lurvey made some nice plays at first base.
