Area roundup: Salem State comes back to beat Mt. Ida in OT

The momentum of a late comeback in regulation carried over into overtime as Salem State improved to 2-0 with a 14-13 victory over Mount Ida.

Matt Whited scored the game winner 1:44 into overtime. A.J. Robertson and Ben Melaugh each scored goals late in regulation to tie the game at 13-13.

Dylan Svenson made eight saves for the Vikings, and Melaugh led the offensive charge with four goals and one assist. Robertson added three goals and a helper, while Frank Lento and Kyle Dolan each had two goals and one assist.


Salem State 16, Mount Ida 10: Local products Bridget Dullea (Bishop Fenwick) and Lauren DeLuca lit up the scoreboard as the Lady Vikings won their season opener. Dullea had five goals and an assist, scoring SSU’s first of the season in the opening minute, and DeLuca had three goals and two helpers. Liz Kosak scored three times and Kelsey Russell added two goals and three assists while Alex Varoutsos earned her first varsity win in net with 12 saves,

Bates 12, Endicott 7: Kelly Tierney scored two goals and added two assists for the Gulls, but it wasn’t enough as they dropped their home opener to slip to 1-1. Goalie Rachel Socolow stopped 14 shots to keep Endicott in the game, and Holly Davis also scored a pair of goals.
