Thursday's area roundup: Dempsey, Masconomet come from behind to top Saugus

BASEBALL

Masconomet 10, Saugus 8: Senior Dan Dempsey hit a 3-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to win it for the Chieftains (18-2). Junior Greg Dougherty hit a two-run homer in the second, scored a run and single in a run. Junior Chris Rich pitched the last three inning to earn his first varsity win.

St. John’s Prep 9, Swampscott 0: Justin Foley picked up the win on the mound going five innings, struck out five and scattered three hits for the Eagles (16-3) Andrew Attar hit a solo home run in the fourth and Dan Trulli hit a two-run homer in the sixth. Sophomore Jacop Yish went 3-for-3 on the day.

VOLLEYBALL

Haverhill 3, St. John’s Prep 0: The ninth seeded Eagles fell to Haverhill in straight sets last night, ending their season at 11-8.

BOYS LACROSSE

Marblehead 12, Triton 1: Dean Fader finished with five points on four goals and one assist to help the Magicians improve to 11-7 overall. Brooks Tyrrell netted three goals and two assists, while Harrison Young picked up a goal and an assist. Charlie Thompson, Matt Rickards and Brad Knittle each scored once, while Nathan Maselek made 12 saves in the win.

GIRLS TENNIS

Swampscott 4, Manchester Essex 1: Anna Raptunovich (6-1, 6-2) and Vivien Geere (6-4, 6-2) took first and second singles respectively for Swampscott (15-2) while third singles Veronica Pyatigorskaya (6-4, 0-6, 6-3) picked up a win against a previously undefeated opponent. Second doubles Sarah Cunningham/Michelle Shnayder (6-3, 6-3) also won for the Big Blue.

Masconomet 3, Hamilton-Wenham 2: Evelyn Harbert (6-2, 6-2) and Rebecca Costa (6-2, 6-3) picked up wins at second and third singles respectively as the Chieftains finished out their regular season at 13-3. Brooke Hunziker/Erin Johnson (6-1, 6-1) were also victorious at first doubles.

Caroline Gribbel won at first singles (6-2, 6-20, while Kate Toner/Bethany Evans previaled at second doubles (6-2, 6-4) for the Generals (7-7)
