Weekend area roundup: Masco boys win eight events, take Cape Ann League Open



Ipswich places fifth in CAL: Emily DeMarco won the mile and Michaela Hederman was first in the 400 and second in the 200 to highlight Ipswich’s fifth-place finish in the Cape Ann League Open. Nora McMorrow took third in the pole vault, four in the long jump and fifth in the 100, while Jill Calvani was third in the long jump and fourth in the 400 hurdles.Devin Smith, Zoe Doran, Ciara O’Flynn and Calvani took third in the 4x400 relay.

Relay paces Generals at CAL Open: Hamilton-Wenham’s 4x800 of Kristin Heffernan, Amanda Grinnett, Olivia Horgan and Emily Horgan won the Cape Ann League title in 10:39 and the Generals were fifth behind North Reading with 65 1/3 points. Emily Weigand was second in the 2-mile (11:30) while Leslie Bynum (discus, 107-feet), Anna Murphy (triple jump, 32-6), Kerry Hull (high jump 4-10) and Vanessa Morris (100, 13;36) all added third place finishes.

Morris was also fourth in the high jump, Emily Horgan finished fourth in the mile and Daniela Garcia was fourth in the 100. Adding fifth place finishes were Bynum in the shot put, Hull in the long jump, Bailey Wallick in the triple jump, Anna Murphy in the hurdles, Olivia Horgan in the mile and the 4x400 relay. The 4x100 of Morris, Liz Kirschner, Maddie Dukkhegyi and Daniela Garcia were sixth.


Salem 4, Peabody 3: Taylor O’Leary knocked in Hannah Wilkins and Joanna Coleman in the top of the seventh to bring the Witches even with Peabody and Desiree Martin scored when Sandy Pelkowsky reached on an error to break the tie. Peabody loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom half but Salem pitcher Meagan Zipper (six hits, four strikeouts, one walk) escaped the jam to give Salem the victory.

The Witches finish the season 5-15, winning two of their last three and denying Peabody a share of the NEC title with Saturday’s win.
