Thursday's area roundup: Salem State women's basketball sails past PSU

WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Salem State 80, Plymouth State 56: The Vikings shot 50 percent from the field en route to their fourth victory of the season. Bishop Fenwick alum Birdget Dullea scored a team-high 17 points in last night’s home victory. SSU took a 46-25 lead into halftime as Ashley White added 16 points. Rachel Carter dropped in 10 points and finished with nine assists and three steal in just 20 minutes of play. The Vikings return to action tomorrow afternoon against Trinity.

MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

Salem State 87, Plymouth State 57: Hannell Velez scored a game-high 20 points as the Vikings even out their record at 3-3 this season. SSU shot on 37 percent from the first half and trailed by as many as seven and were down (33-30) at halftime. In the second half the Viking went off for a 20-2 run. Velez went 8-8 from the floor, Justin Nieves had 15 points, while Nate Simpson finished with a double-double on 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.

MEN’S COLLEGE HOCKEY

Plymouth State 3, Salem State 2: Junior Ryan Sutliffe made 33 saves, though the Vikings slip to 2-3-1 on the season. Freshmen Andrew Bucci and Cam Moniz had the goals for Salem State, which returns to action tomorrow against Westfield State.
