Wednesday's area roundup: H-W cross country remains unbeaten



HW Sweepes: Hamilton-Wenham bested North Reading, 21-37 and Triton, 15-50 to move to 4-3. Matt Gillis (15:14) won the race for the Generals, Jack Blatchford (15:41) took third, Michael Allara (15:44) was fourth Kevin Rutigliano (16:15) came in sixth and Sam Erhard (17:13) was seventh.

Tigers split: Ipswich’s Michael Riddle finished fifth in 17:35 to lead the Tigers to a win over Lynnfield, 21-35, while Newburyport took the top four spots to topple Ipswich 16-47. Michael Connor (18:47), Luke Sirois (18:50), Conor Fitzpatrick (19:02), Justine Bergner (19:17) and Anthony Looby (19:47).


Peabody 3, Hamilton-Wenham 0: The Tanners won in straight sets, 25-19, 25-21, 25-15.

Hamilton-Wenham’s Nikki Leonard had 40 digs and didn’t miss a serve while Rachel Gershlak had 32 digs and two aces.

Central Catholic 3, Bishop Fenwick 2: Kate Lipka led Bishop Fenwick with 11 kills and four blocks but the Crusaders lost in five games (22-25, 20-25, 25-18, 25-19, 15-9) to move to 8-3 overall. Jess Ywuc had four kills and four blocks while Tessa McLaughlin added 26 assists.

Pingree 3, Milton Academy 0: Senior captain Bridget Healey served 12 straight points to end the second set as the Highlanders (4-4) rolled 25-13, 25-13, 25-22. Middle hitters Sam Torto and Hanna Stasiuk also had great games at the net.

Beverly 3, Woburn 0: The Panthers improved to 7-1 on the season after a straight set 25-14, 25-14, 25-19 triumph.


Endicott 5, Gordon 2: The Gulls (6-5-2) earned their first win over rival Gordon in program history behind two goals and an assist from Jordan Daniel. Alex Tonsberg and Bobby Durben also scored and Dan Higgins earned the win in net.

Gordon (3-7-1) got goals by Alek Duba and David Egeler but an own goal derailed the Scots comeback hopes.



Gordon 8, Roger Williams 1: The Scots topped RWU’s club team behind two goals from Brittany Hawkins.



Nichols 5, Endicott 4: The Gulls (6-1) lost for the first time this season in a razor thin decision at home. Amy Heacox and Natalie Egbert were Endicott’s singles winners while Heacox and Brittany Potter and Egbert and Chrissy Martel won doubles matches.

Gordon 9, Mount Ida 0: Lily Drescher and Sarah Hickey won the top two singles matches and took first doubles, as the Scots (4-7) swept the competition.


Salem State 3, Keene State 0: The Vikings (6-5-1) got goals from Matt Figueiredo, Eryk Fernandez and Carlos Escobar in a shutout win at home. Scott Hall had four saves in the shutout and Bishop Fenwick grad Eric Moreno had one assist.
